Why This Is a Necessary Step
After a person has passed away, it is the responsibility of their family to have their name removed from the official electoral roll. This is a vital civic duty that helps maintain the integrity of India's democratic process. An up-to-date and accurate
voter list is essential for conducting free and fair elections. Removing the names of deceased individuals prevents the possibility of fraudulent voting or 'ghost votes', which can undermine election outcomes. Furthermore, it ensures that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has a precise count of eligible voters in every constituency, which aids in better election management, from planning polling booths to deploying resources effectively. By taking this step, you contribute to a more transparent and reliable electoral system for everyone.
Understanding Form 7: The Key Document
The official application for the deletion of a name from the voter list is known as Form 7. This form is specifically designed for objecting to an inclusion or requesting the removal of an entry from the electoral roll for various reasons, including death, permanent relocation, or the discovery of a duplicate entry. The process is governed by the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. Any close relative or person who knows the deceased can file this form. It serves as a formal request to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the constituency to initiate the removal process. The form requires details about the person filing the objection (the applicant) and the person whose name is to be deleted.
Documents and Details You Will Need
Before you begin the online process, it is best to have all the necessary information and documents ready. The most crucial document is a copy of the official death certificate of the deceased relative. This serves as the primary proof for the deletion request. You will also need the EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card) number of the deceased person, if available, as this greatly speeds up the process of locating their entry in the electoral roll. Additionally, you, as the applicant, will need your own EPIC number and a mobile number to register on the online portal and receive updates on your application's status.
Step-by-Step Guide to the Online Process
The Election Commission of India provides a centralized portal for all voter-related services, making the process convenient and accessible. Visit the official Voters' Services Portal (voters.eci.gov.in). If you are a new user, you will need to sign up using your mobile number. Once logged in, look for the option for 'Deletion of Name' or Form 7. Select the option for deleting the name of a family member. You will then be prompted to fill out the digital Form 7. Carefully enter your details as the applicant and then the details of the deceased person, including their EPIC number, name, and address. Select 'Death' as the reason for deletion. You will be required to upload a scanned copy of the death certificate. After filling all details, review the form, accept the declaration, and submit it. You will receive an acknowledgment number, which is crucial for tracking your application.
What Happens After You Submit the Form?
Once you submit Form 7 online, it is sent to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the concerned constituency. The ERO initiates a verification process. This typically involves the local Booth Level Officer (BLO) who may visit the registered address to verify the claim. The BLO's report is then submitted back to the ERO. Based on this verification and the submitted death certificate, the ERO will approve the deletion. You can use the acknowledgment number you received upon submission to track the status of your application on the Voters' Services Portal. Once approved, the name will be permanently removed from the electoral roll.
Alternative Method: The Offline Process
For those who are unable to use the online portal or prefer an in-person method, there is an offline alternative. You can download Form 7 from the Election Commission's website or obtain a physical copy from the office of your local Electoral Registration Officer or Booth Level Officer. Fill out the form manually, attach a physical copy of the death certificate, and submit it to your area's BLO or the ERO's office. When submitting the form, always ask for an acknowledgment receipt. This receipt will contain the application number that you can use to follow up on the status later.
