The Royal Spectacle of Mysuru Dasara
Mysuru Dasara is more than a festival; it's an inheritance of royal pageantry. The ten-day celebration, scheduled from October 11th to 21st this year, culminates in the grand Vijayadashami procession. The highlight is the 'Jamboo Savari', where the idol
of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried in a golden howdah atop a decorated elephant. The entire city transforms, but the main draw is the Mysore Palace, which is illuminated by nearly 100,000 light bulbs every evening, creating a breathtaking sight. The festival grounds also host a variety of cultural programmes, including music, dance, and a traditional wrestling tournament that draws competitors from across the country, offering a full immersion into Karnataka's heritage.
Kolkata's Creative Spirit: Durga Puja
From October 16th to 21st, Kolkata will transform into a city that never sleeps during Durga Puja. This festival, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is a city-wide art exhibition. Neighbourhoods compete to create the most innovative and elaborate 'pandals'—temporary temples housing exquisitely handcrafted idols of Goddess Durga. Pandal-hopping is the main activity, with millions of people exploring the city's artistic creations day and night. The experience is a sensory overload of rhythmic drum beats ('dhaak'), aromatic street food, and the collective joy of a community celebrating its biggest annual event. The festival concludes with 'Sindoor Khela', where married women bid farewell to the goddess before her idol is immersed in the river.
