Before You Go: Prep for the Coast
A successful road trip starts before you turn the key. Ensure your vehicle is serviced, and your tyres are in good condition for navigating a mix of national highways and smaller coastal roads. To beat the infamous city traffic and potential bottlenecks
on the Mumbai-Goa highway (NH-66), an early start—ideally before 6 AM—is non-negotiable. The period just after the monsoon, from September to February, is ideal; the landscape is a brilliant green, and the weather is pleasant. Booking accommodations in advance, especially on weekends, is wise. Look for local homestays in towns like Harihareshwar or Dapoli for an authentic experience complete with delicious, home-cooked Konkani cuisine.
Day 1: Mumbai to Harihareshwar
Your journey begins by heading south out of Mumbai on NH-66. The drive to Mangaon, which takes about three to four hours, is your first major leg. From Mangaon, you’ll leave the highway and turn towards the coast, heading for Harihareshwar. This tranquil temple town, roughly five hours of driving from Mumbai, is an ideal first stop. After checking in, make your way to the Harihareshwar Temple, a revered site dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple's unique feature is the 'pradakshina marg', a dramatic walking path carved into the rocky shoreline behind the temple. This path offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea crashing against the cliffs, especially during sunset. The town’s beach is a quiet, black-sand shore perfect for an evening stroll to unwind after your drive.
Day 2: Coastal Gems from Harihareshwar to Dapoli
Today is dedicated to exploring the uncrowded beaches that define this stretch of the Konkan. After breakfast, take a short drive north to visit Shrivardhan and Diveagar beaches. While Diveagar has some options for water sports, it remains far less commercialised than the beaches closer to Mumbai. From there, the real adventure begins as you drive south along the scenic coastal road towards Dapoli. This route is the heart of your trip, offering stunning sea views at every turn. Make a stop at Anjarle, a pristine beach famous for the ‘Kadyavarcha Ganpati’—a Ganesh temple perched on a cliff. Alternatively, the serene beach at Velas offers a quiet escape. These smaller beaches are where you’ll find the solitude the headline promises. End your day by checking into a homestay or resort in or around Dapoli.
Day 3: A Taste of Local Life and the Journey Home
Start your final day with a visit to the bustling Harnai fishing village, near Dapoli. If you're there early enough, you can witness the lively fish auction on the beach, a truly unique cultural experience. After exploring the adjacent Suvarnadurg sea fort, it’s time to begin the journey back to Mumbai. You can either retrace your path to NH-66 for a faster drive or meander back up the coastal roads if time permits. Stop at a local market to pick up Konkani specialities like kokum syrup, cashews, or fresh produce as a delicious reminder of your trip. The drive back will take approximately five to six hours, getting you into the city by evening, feeling refreshed and reset by the coastal calm.
