The success of missions like Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1 has ignited a powerful wave of curiosity and ambition among India's youth. For many, a career in space science is no longer a distant dream but a tangible goal. Recognizing this, ISRO has strategically
developed a suite of outreach programs designed to 'catch them young' and nurture the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. These initiatives move learning beyond textbooks, offering students direct exposure to the challenges and triumphs of space exploration. They are designed to create awareness, build scientific temper, and encourage more students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Catching Them Young: The YUVIKA Initiative
One of ISRO's flagship initiatives is the 'YUva VIgyani KAryakram' (YUVIKA), or Young Scientist Programme. This two-week residential program is specifically designed for students who have completed Class 9. The core idea is to impart basic knowledge on space science, technology, and applications. During the program, students visit premier ISRO centres like the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and Satish Dhawan Space Centre. They attend lectures by senior scientists, participate in hands-on activities like building model rockets and DIY kits, and even get to interact with astronauts. The selection process is comprehensive, with special weightage given to students from rural and panchayat-level schools to ensure balanced regional representation across India.
University Stars: The START Programme
For older students, ISRO offers the Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START) programme. This introductory-level online course is aimed at final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students in physical sciences and technology. Delivered by scientists from ISRO and other Indian academic institutions, START covers diverse domains like Astronomy, Heliophysics, and Instrumentation. The program provides a crucial overview of the research opportunities and career options available in the space sector. It helps students understand the cross-disciplinary nature of space science, showing them how their specific skills can be applied to the field and helping them choose a suitable career path. This initiative is seen as a strategic effort to build the human resources needed for India's future ambitious missions.
Internships and Project-Based Learning
Beyond structured programs, ISRO offers internships and academic project work opportunities at its various centres. These are available for undergraduate and postgraduate students in fields like engineering, computer science, and physics. Internships provide real-world exposure to India's space missions, satellite technologies, and launch vehicle systems. While many of these opportunities are unpaid, they offer invaluable hands-on experience and a certificate upon completion. This direct engagement allows students to work under the mentorship of top scientists and contribute to projects that are useful to the organisation, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application.
