The Remarkably Low Visa Fee
For Indian passport holders, the cost of a Japanese visa is refreshingly simple and low. The Embassy of Japan in India has confirmed that the fee for both single-entry and multiple-entry visas remains just ₹500. This is a special concessional rate for Indians
that has been preserved even as Japan implemented a major global visa fee hike for other nationalities starting July 1, 2026. For most other foreign nationals applying in India, the cost for a single-entry visa has risen to ₹8,650, making the Indian fee exceptionally low. This means whether you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime cherry blossom tour or hoping for repeat visits, the core government fee is identical and minimal.
Putting the Cost into Perspective
To understand just how friendly Japan's visa fee is, it helps to compare it with other popular destinations for Indian tourists. Applying for a short-stay Schengen visa, which covers 29 European countries, costs €90 (approximately ₹8,000–₹8,500) just for the consular fee. A standard six-month visitor visa for the United Kingdom now costs £135 (roughly ₹16,000–₹16,500). Meanwhile, a standard tourist visa (B1/B2) for the United States involves a non-refundable application fee of $185 (around ₹15,400), with potential new fees expected to raise the total cost significantly. Against these figures, Japan's ₹500 fee stands out as a clear and significant cost-saver, lowering the barrier to entry for many aspiring travellers.
Understanding the Total Outlay
While the core visa fee is just ₹500, applicants must also pay a mandatory service charge to VFS Global, the authorised partner for processing applications in India. As of early 2026, this service charge is ₹800 per application, inclusive of taxes. Therefore, the minimum cost to submit a Japan visa application is ₹1,300. This total is still substantially lower than the final costs for Schengen, UK, or US visas, which often range from ₹11,000 to over ₹20,000 after including their respective service fees and other mandatory charges. Applicants can also opt for additional services like courier return of their passport for an extra charge.
A Streamlined Application Process
The process for Indian citizens is straightforward. Applications are submitted through authorised VFS Global centres located across the country. It is advisable to apply well in advance, but generally not more than three months before the intended travel date. The required documents typically include a valid passport, a completed application form, photographs, proof of financial stability, and a detailed travel itinerary. For added convenience, Japan has also introduced an eVISA system for eligible Indian travellers applying for single-entry short-term stays, which can further simplify the process. The standard processing time for a paper application at the embassy is a minimum of five working days.
Strengthening Ties Through Tourism
The continued low visa fee for Indians is not an accident but rather a reflection of the strengthening relationship between India and Japan. Both nations have been actively working to boost tourism and cultural exchange. Initiatives to promote Buddhist heritage sites in India to Japanese tourists and improve air connectivity are part of a broader strategy to encourage more travel between the two countries. By keeping the visa process accessible and affordable, Japan is sending a clear signal that Indian tourists are welcome, making it a more attractive option for holidays, business, and cultural exploration.
