The review found that lower protein intake was linked to improved metabolism, reduced cellular damage, and the activation of pathways associated with healthier aging across species, from yeast to humans.
The Biological Case for Moderation
How could eating less protein be good for you? The review highlights a key hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). This hormone's levels tend to rise when protein intake is lower, and it's associated with a host of benefits, including better blood sugar control, increased energy expenditure, and reduced inflammation. The research also suggests that overconsumption of certain amino acids—the building blocks of protein—may activate growth pathways that, in a sedentary person, could promote inflammation and metabolic issues. But Don't Toss Your Protein Shake Just Yet
