A Carriage Like No Other
The star of this journey is the Vistadome coach, an engineering marvel designed for sightseeing. These special air-conditioned carriages feature enormous glass windows, a transparent glass-domed roof, and seats that can rotate 360 degrees. This allows
travellers to face the direction of the best scenery or simply turn to converse with family and friends. The primary goal is to provide an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the landscape, making the journey itself the destination. Unlike standard coaches, the Vistadome provides an expansive perspective, turning the trip into a cinematic experience as you glide through the hills. An observation lounge at the rear of the coach offers yet another vantage point to watch the tracks disappear into the lush greenery.
The Monsoon's Verdant Spectacle
While Araku is a year-round destination, the monsoon season from July to September offers a particularly magical experience. The rains breathe life into the Eastern Ghats, transforming the rolling hills into a vibrant canvas of emerald green. From your glass-enclosed seat, you will witness countless seasonal waterfalls cascading down rocky cliffs, streams swelling into vigorous rivers, and a romantic mist that hangs over the valleys. The route takes you through approximately 58 tunnels and across 84 bridges, with each emergence from a tunnel revealing another dramatic, rain-washed vista. This is when the valley is at its most lush and photogenic, with clouds often floating at eye level, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
Highlights of the Journey
The train journey from Visakhapatnam to Araku is dotted with memorable sights. The train chugs through the Anantagiri ghat section, renowned for its dense forests and coffee plantations that become intensely fragrant during the monsoon. A key stop along the route is Borra Caves, one of the largest and deepest cave systems in India. While you would need to disembark to explore their impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations, the train passes right by the Borra Guhalu railway station. Other attractions that define the Araku region include the Chaparai waterfalls, known for its smooth, rocky slopes perfect for picnics, and the Katiki waterfalls, which become a powerful torrent during the rainy season.
Planning Your Vistadome Trip
The Vistadome coaches are attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Express (Train No. 08551). The train typically departs from Visakhapatnam in the morning, making it ideal for a day trip or an overnight stay. Tickets for the Vistadome coach (listed as 'EV' or Executive Chair Car on booking portals) are in high demand, especially during peak season and weekends, so it is crucial to book well in advance through the IRCTC website or app. The fare for the Vistadome coach is higher than other classes but is widely considered worth the price for the unique experience. A popular itinerary is to take the train up to Araku and return by road, which allows you to stop at viewpoints like the Galikonda View Point and explore the Borra Caves more thoroughly on your way back.
