This precision farming approach increases crop yields, reduces waste, and lowers costs for smallholders. AI tools are also used to detect pests and diseases early by analysing images from drones, allowing for targeted interventions that minimise chemical use. Furthermore, platforms like DeHaat use AI to connect farmers directly with buyers, streamlining the supply chain and ensuring better price discovery for millions of farmers.
A New Prescription for Healthcare
India's healthcare system is vast and faces challenges of access and a shortage of specialists, especially in rural areas. AI is emerging as a powerful ally, augmenting the capabilities of medical professionals. AI adoption in India's healthcare sector is among the fastest in the world, addressing critical gaps in diagnostics. For instance, AI algorithms can analyse medical images like X-rays and retinal scans with remarkable accuracy, helping to detect diseases like tuberculosis or diabetic retinopathy much earlier, especially in remote eClinics. This is crucial in a country where the radiologist-to-population ratio can be alarmingly low. Beyond diagnostics, AI is streamlining hospital operations by predicting patient flow, managing bed allocation, and optimising pharmacy inventories. The government's Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is creating a vast repository of digitised health records, which provides the data backbone for developing more powerful predictive health models, while new approaches like federated learning help train these models without compromising patient privacy.
Smarter Finance and Commerce
In the world of finance and e-commerce, AI is the engine behind the user-friendly experiences many Indians now take for granted. Conversational AI, in the form of chatbots and voice assistants, powers customer service for everything from banking queries to ordering a pizza on WhatsApp, handled by platforms like Haptik and Yellow.ai. Fintech companies use AI for risk assessment in lending, personalising financial advice, and detecting fraudulent transactions with a speed and accuracy that surpasses human capabilities. E-commerce platforms leverage AI to personalise shopping experiences, manage complex logistics, and forecast demand to ensure products are in the right place at the right time. Payment platforms like Razorpay are embedding AI to automate invoicing and streamline business operations for small and medium enterprises.
Building a Homegrown AI Ecosystem
A key aspect of India's AI journey is the focus on building sovereign capabilities. This includes developing AI models trained specifically for the Indian context. Companies like Sarvam AI and Krutrim are creating large language models that understand and operate in multiple Indian languages, a crucial step for making AI accessible to a billion non-English speakers. This focus on linguistic diversity is supported by government initiatives like Bhashini, which provides tools for translation and speech recognition. This homegrown approach ensures that the benefits of AI are not limited to the English-speaking urban population but can diffuse across the country, creating more inclusive growth. NASSCOM reports indicate that AI has the potential to add nearly $500 billion to India's GDP by 2025, driven largely by such productivity gains across sectors.
