For decades, a successful UK visa application for an Indian citizen concluded with a physical sticker, or 'vignette', being placed in their passport. That era is over. The UK has now moved to a fully digital system for all applicants, including the more
than 500,000 Indians who were granted visas in the year ending March 2026. Instead of a sticker, your permission to travel is now a secure digital record called an eVisa. This electronic visa is linked directly to your passport number within the UK's immigration database. This change is part of a broader government strategy to modernise the UK border, making entry quicker and more secure.
How the New Process Works
While the outcome is different, the initial steps of the application will feel familiar. Indian applicants still need to complete the form on the official GOV.UK website, pay the fee, and attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide biometric information like fingerprints and a photograph. The key change happens after your application is approved. Instead of submitting your passport for a sticker, you will receive an email notification confirming your visa has been granted. This email will guide you to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account online to access and manage your new eVisa.
Your New Pre-Trip Checklist
With no physical sticker to check, your pre-flight readiness now involves a few crucial digital steps. First, upon receiving your approval, you must create your UKVI account as instructed. Each traveller, including dependent children, needs their own separate account. You will then use the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to verify your identity and link your passport to your account. Before heading to the airport, your checklist must include: logging into your UKVI account to confirm your eVisa is active, and double-checking that all personal details, especially your name and passport number, are 100% correct. An eVisa with incorrect details is invalid.
At the Airport and UK Border
The new system makes airlines part of the immigration process. Before you are allowed to board your flight in India, airline staff will electronically verify that you have a valid eVisa linked to the passport you are travelling on. This is why having all your details correct is so important; a mismatch could result in being denied boarding. Upon arrival in the UK, the process should be smoother. Instead of inspecting a sticker, the Border Force officer will simply scan your passport. Their system will then display your digital immigration status, including your visa type and its conditions. While it's wise to have a digital copy of your approval email handy, you will not need to present any physical visa document.
Avoiding Common Problems
The biggest risk in this new digital system is incorrect information. A simple typo in your name or passport number during the application can cause significant delays or even refusal of entry. It is critical to double-check every detail before submitting your application. If you get a new passport after your eVisa is issued, you must update your UKVI account with the new passport details before you travel. Failure to do so will invalidate your eVisa, as it is linked to your old passport number. Always apply well in advance of your travel dates and only use the official GOV.UK website to avoid scams.
