The Problem with Indoor Drying
When the skies open up, our first instinct is to bring the laundry inside. However, drying clothes indoors releases a surprising amount of moisture into the air—each load can add up to two litres of water to your home's atmosphere. In the already high
humidity of the Indian monsoon, which can exceed 80%, this extra moisture has nowhere to go. This creates a perfect breeding ground for mould and mildew on walls, furniture, and even within the fabric of your clothes. That musty smell on a seemingly clean shirt is a tell-tale sign of bacterial growth, which can begin in as little as four to six hours in a damp, poorly ventilated space. Beyond the smell, these conditions can also aggravate allergies and respiratory issues.
Start with Smarter Washing
Your drying plan begins at the washing machine. Before you even think about hanging your clothes, ensure you're removing as much water as possible. Use the highest spin cycle your machine offers. For heavier items, running an extra spin cycle can make a significant difference, cutting down on the eventual drying time. Washing smaller loads more frequently is also more effective than trying to dry one massive load all at once. This prevents overcrowding in the machine, allowing for better water extraction, and makes the subsequent drying process much more manageable.
Location and Airflow are Key
Where you hang your clothes matters immensely. Avoid leaving them in a pile or crowded onto a single rack. Instead, space garments out on a drying rack or individual hangers, ensuring air can circulate freely around each item. Place the drying rack in a well-ventilated room, preferably one with an exhaust fan, like a bathroom. If you can, position it near a window to take advantage of any available natural airflow, but away from walls to prevent moisture from getting trapped. Using a fan—whether a ceiling fan or a pedestal fan—is a crucial step. A fan on medium to high speed can reduce drying time by up to 50% by constantly moving the saturated air away from your clothes. This constant circulation is your best defence against stagnant, damp air.
Level Up with a Dehumidifier
For those in extremely humid coastal cities or who face persistent dampness, a dehumidifier is the most effective tool in the arsenal. A dehumidifier works by actively pulling moisture out of the air, dramatically speeding up the evaporation process for your clothes. In a closed room with a dehumidifier, drying time can be reduced from over 12 hours to just 4-6 hours. While it's an investment, it solves the root problem by lowering the room's overall humidity, making it an invaluable appliance during the three-to-four-month monsoon season. It not only dries clothes faster but also protects your home from the damaging effects of excess moisture and prevents the growth of mould and mildew.
Finishing Touches for Freshness
Even with the best plan, some items might retain a hint of dampness. For cottons and linens that are almost dry, a quick pass with a hot iron can remove the last traces of moisture, especially in thick seams and collars. The heat also helps kill any lingering odour-causing bacteria. To combat musty smells in your closets where clothes are stored, you can use natural moisture absorbers like baking soda or charcoal briquettes in small bowls. Adding half a cup of white vinegar to your washing machine's rinse cycle once a week can also help eliminate residual bacteria and keep clothes smelling fresh from the start.
