Lakshadweep is a protected Union Territory, and to preserve its fragile ecosystem and unique culture, access for non-residents is regulated. An entry permit is mandatory for every person who is not a native of the islands. The only exceptions are for government
officials and armed forces personnel visiting or working on the islands, along with their families. Thanks to recent changes in April 2026, the process has been significantly simplified for tourists. Key hurdles such as needing a local sponsor or obtaining a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from your hometown have been removed for tourist applications. However, the permit itself remains a compulsory document you must obtain before travel.
Who Can Visit Which Islands?
While the archipelago consists of 36 islands, tourist access is limited to a select few to minimise environmental impact. For Indian tourists, the islands of Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kalpeni, and Minicoy are generally open for visits. Foreign nationals, who must possess a valid Indian visa, are typically permitted to visit Agatti, Bangaram, and Kadmat. It is critical to note that your permit is island-specific. You will only be granted entry to the islands that you explicitly list in your application, including any islands you may pass through for transit. Unscheduled island hopping is not permitted.
Your Step-by-Step Online Application Guide
The most efficient way to secure your permit is through the official ePermit portal (epermit.utl.gov.in). First, you need to sign up and create an account using your name, email, and mobile number. Once registered, log in and select the option to apply for a new tourist permit. You will need to fill in your personal details, your proposed travel dates, and specify every island you plan to visit. The application also requires you to upload a recent passport-sized photograph and a scanned copy of a valid photo ID, such as an Aadhaar card. After filling out the form and uploading the necessary documents, you can submit the application and pay the required fees online. An application can include up to six individuals.
Essential Documents and Timelines
Though the need for a PCC and local sponsor has been eliminated for tourists, you still need to have your documents in order. You will require a valid photo ID like an Aadhaar card or passport and a recent passport-sized photograph with specific dimensions, typically 150x200 pixels. The administration advises applying at least 14 days before your planned travel date. This allows sufficient time for the Lakshadweep Police to conduct their internal security verification, which now happens after the application is submitted. It is strongly recommended that you wait until your entry permit is approved and you have received it via email before booking any flights or accommodation. This will help you avoid potential cancellation charges if there are any delays in processing.
After Approval and Upon Arrival
Once your application is approved, you will receive the ePermit via email. You should print a copy of this permit and keep it with you, as it will be checked by airline staff before you board your flight to Agatti Airport (AGX), the main air gateway to the islands. Upon arrival in Lakshadweep, you must present this permit to the authorities for verification. Remember, the permit is your key to entering this beautiful, protected paradise.
