To understand why humidity is such a sleep disruptor, we first need to look at how your body prepares for rest. Your body operates with an internal thermostat, and a crucial signal for it to start winding down for sleep is a slight drop in core body temperature.
This cooling process is essential for initiating sleep and moving smoothly through its different stages. Throughout the night, your body continues to regulate its temperature, ensuring you can reach the deeper, more restorative phases of sleep. Think of it as your body turning down its internal heating to conserve energy and focus on critical repair and recovery work.
How Humidity Sabotages the Cooling Process
The body’s primary method for cooling itself is by sweating. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it takes heat with it, effectively lowering your body temperature. This is where monsoon humidity throws a spanner in the works. High humidity means the air is already saturated with water vapour. Because the air is so moist, your sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. Instead of disappearing and taking heat with it, sweat clings to your skin, leaving you feeling sticky and warm. Your body has to work much harder to cool down, a struggle that often leads to tossing, turning, and a general feeling of discomfort.
Less Deep Sleep and More Waking Up
This constant battle to regulate temperature has a direct impact on the quality of your sleep. Studies have shown that high humidity can increase wakefulness and reduce the amount of time spent in the most critical sleep stages: slow-wave sleep (deep sleep) and REM sleep. Deep sleep is vital for physical recovery, including tissue repair and immune system function, while REM sleep is crucial for memory consolidation and emotional regulation. When humidity disrupts these stages, you might wake up feeling groggy and unrefreshed, even if you were in bed for a full eight hours.
Create a Cool, Dry Oasis
Since you can't change the weather, the best approach is to control your immediate environment. Using a dehumidifier in the bedroom is one of the most effective ways to combat monsoon humidity, aiming for a level between 40% and 50%. If you don't have a dehumidifier, running the air conditioner can also help, as it naturally removes moisture from the air. A simple fan can also be a powerful tool; while it doesn't lower humidity, the increased airflow helps sweat evaporate more effectively, creating a cooling effect. Ensuring your room is well-ventilated during drier parts of the day can also prevent moisture buildup.
Choose Your Fabrics Wisely
The materials you surround yourself with at night matter immensely. Opt for bedding made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials are much better at wicking moisture away from your skin compared to synthetic fabrics like polyester, which can trap heat and sweat. The same logic applies to your sleepwear. Loose-fitting pyjamas made of light cotton will feel far more comfortable than heavy or tight clothing. Some people even find that waterproof mattress protectors can help, as they prevent moisture from seeping into the mattress, which can become a breeding ground for allergens in damp conditions.
Adjust Your Evening Routine
A few small changes to your pre-bedtime habits can make a big difference. Taking a warm—not hot—shower an hour or two before bed can be surprisingly effective. The warm water initially raises your body temperature, but as you cool down afterwards, it mimics the natural temperature drop that signals sleep to your brain. Also, be mindful of your diet and hydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, but try to avoid large amounts right before bed. Lighter evening meals are preferable to heavy, spicy, or fried foods, which can raise your body temperature as your system works to digest them.
