Forget what you know about planes. The International Space Station (ISS) appears as a very bright, steady white light moving silently and purposefully across the night sky. It doesn't have the blinking red and green lights of an aircraft. To the naked
eye, it looks like a brilliant, fast-moving star and is often the brightest object in the sky after the Moon. It travels at an astonishing 28,000 kilometres per hour, completing an orbit of our planet every 90 minutes. The Science of the Sighting
The ISS isn't visible because of its own lights, but because its massive solar arrays and modules reflect sunlight back down to Earth. This is the same reason we can see the Moon. Because it relies on reflected sunlight, sightings are only possible during a specific window: the hours just after sunset or just before sunrise.
