A New Daily Connection
Indian Railways has launched a new daily express train, directly linking Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district. This service, which addresses a long-standing demand from residents and travellers,
covers the 510-kilometre route, providing a much-needed additional travel option. The train operates as number 15087 from CSMT to Sawantwadi Road and 15088 for the return journey. The inaugural service was flagged off on September 3, 2026, by railway officials and dignitaries, marking a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity.
The Schedule and Route Details
Designed for passenger convenience, the train offers an overnight journey from Mumbai. The CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Express (15087) departs from CSMT at 11:55 PM and is scheduled to arrive at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next day. On its return, the Sawantwadi Road–CSMT Express (15088) leaves at 5:20 PM and reaches Mumbai at 6:40 AM the following morning, making it ideal for those needing to travel back to the city for work or other commitments. The train features an extensive network of 22 stops, including major stations like Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal, ensuring wide accessibility across the Konkan belt.
Solving a Persistent Travel Problem
The Mumbai-Konkan route is notoriously congested, especially during festival seasons like Ganesh Chaturthi when hundreds of thousands travel to their native villages. This new daily service is expected to significantly ease the pressure on existing trains and reduce reliance on road travel along the often-gridlocked Mumbai-Goa highway. By providing a reliable, comfortable, and safe alternative, the service benefits not just festival travellers but also students, employees, and families who journey between Mumbai and Konkan throughout the year. The train uses modern LHB rakes, known for their improved passenger comfort and safety.
Onboard Comfort and Classes
The new express train is configured to cater to a variety of passengers and budgets. Its composition includes a mix of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned coaches. The rake consists of one AC First Class coach, two AC 2-tier coaches, three AC 3-tier coaches, and four sleeper class coaches. In addition, there are four general second-class coaches for unreserved travel, a second-class luggage-cum-guard's van, and a generator car. This diverse arrangement ensures that options are available for everyone, from luxury travellers to those seeking the most economical way to journey.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
Beyond passenger convenience, the new rail link is poised to deliver a substantial boost to the Konkan region's economy. Improved accessibility to tourist hotspots like Tarkarli, Amboli, and the beaches of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg is expected to increase visitor numbers, benefiting local hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. Furthermore, officials have highlighted that easier transport will help local producers, including fishermen and farmers, gain better access to the large Mumbai market for their goods. This enhanced connectivity is seen as a key driver for regional development, potentially creating more local employment and reducing the need for migration to larger cities for work.
