A Demand That Outpaces Supply
India is in the midst of an AI revolution, but its momentum is threatened by a significant talent shortage. According to a joint report by Deloitte and Nasscom, the demand for AI professionals in India is projected to nearly double to over 1.25 million
by 2027. However, the supply of qualified experts is not keeping pace. This chasm is what experts call the 'AI skills gap'—a disconnect between the advanced, practical AI capabilities required by businesses and the theoretical knowledge possessed by much of the workforce. This isn't just about a lack of people; it's about a lack of the right skills. Employers report that while many candidates have basic AI awareness, they struggle to find professionals who can apply AI to solve real-world business problems. As a result, 50% of employers identify a skills mismatch as a key hiring challenge.
The Hunt for Niche, Hybrid Talent
The skills in highest demand are both technical and strategic. Companies are no longer just looking for data scientists who can build models; they need professionals skilled in data engineering, machine learning operations (MLOps), and cybersecurity. There is also a growing need for people who can combine frontier AI skills with foundational strengths like business acumen, domain expertise, and leadership. This has led to a surge in 'skills-first' recruitment, where demonstrable abilities and certifications are often valued more than traditional degrees. In fact, 40% of employers now prefer demonstrable AI skills over a specific degree. This shift is creating a two-tiered job market: one for those with niche, applicable AI skills who command premium salaries, and another for those with more generic qualifications who face greater competition.
How Hiring Itself Is Changing
To navigate this tough landscape, companies are overhauling their hiring strategies. The traditional model of screening candidates based on degrees is becoming obsolete. Instead, firms are using project-based hiring, hackathons, and internships to identify candidates who can prove their capabilities. Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India, which are at the forefront of AI adoption, are particularly feeling the strain. A recent PwC report found that 72% of GCCs need to upskill or reskill over 40% of their existing workforce to adapt. They also report that it takes a new hire an average of nearly nine months to become fully productive, a delay caused directly by the skills gap. This has made internal upskilling a strategic imperative, not just a 'nice-to-have'. Companies are investing heavily in AI-powered learning platforms and creating their own 'AI academies' to build talent from within.
Bridging the Divide: A National Effort
The responsibility for closing the skills gap extends beyond individual companies. It requires a coordinated national effort. Industry bodies like Nasscom have warned that without a focus on deep engineering expertise, India risks creating a workforce that is merely 'AI-reliant' rather than truly 'AI-native'. While recent data shows that a high percentage of young tech professionals are using AI, only a fraction qualify as 'AI-native'—possessing the deep technical and judgement skills to innovate. To address this, leaders are calling for stronger collaboration between industry, academia, and government. Recommendations include integrating practical AI coursework into university curricula, co-designing industry-ready certifications, and scaling up apprenticeship models. Government initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission aim to build this ecosystem by focusing on skills, computing infrastructure, and startup financing.
