The Truth About SMS Alert Fees
For years, a small quarterly fee for SMS alerts was a standard deduction for most bank customers. However, recent regulatory changes have shifted this landscape. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks that they cannot levy charges for mandatory
alerts, such as those for compliance, fraud warnings, or customer awareness messages. This means you should not be paying for one-time passwords (OTPs) or alerts about potentially suspicious activity on your account. Banks are also no longer required to send SMS alerts for every transaction under ₹500, giving them the option to use other channels like app notifications. However, charges may still apply for optional or customized alert services. Check your bank's schedule of charges and review your alert settings. If you are being charged a flat fee, it's worth questioning what services it covers, as banks are encouraged to charge based on actual usage rather than a fixed rate.
Decoding Your Debit Card Charges
Your debit card is a key to your bank account, but it comes with its own set of potential costs. The most common is the Annual Maintenance Charge (AMC), a yearly fee that banks charge to maintain your card services. This fee can range from around ₹150 to over ₹750, depending on the bank and the type of card you hold—basic cards are cheaper, while premium or platinum cards with more features have higher AMCs. This amount is usually debited directly from your account once a year. Beyond the AMC, look out for other fees. These include card issuance fees (though many basic cards are free for the first year), replacement fees if you lose your card (which can be around ₹300 or more), and charges for regenerating your PIN. While using your card for shopping at domestic stores and websites is typically free, be aware of transaction limits and potential charges for exceeding the number of free ATM withdrawals per month.
The High Cost of Foreign Transactions
Using your Indian debit card abroad or on an international website can attract significant fees. The most common is the foreign currency markup fee. When you make a purchase in a different currency, your bank converts the amount to rupees. On top of the exchange rate, it adds a markup, typically between 2% and 3.5% of the transaction value. This fee isn't always listed separately and is often bundled into the exchange rate, making it a hidden cost. On a large purchase, this can amount to a substantial sum. Adding to the cost, you'll also pay GST on the markup fee.
The 'Dynamic Currency Conversion' Trap
When you're overseas, a merchant or ATM might offer to charge you in Indian Rupees (INR) instead of the local currency. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). While it may seem convenient to see the cost in your home currency, you should almost always decline this offer. When you accept DCC, the exchange rate is set by the merchant's payment provider, not by your bank or card network like Visa or Mastercard. This rate often includes a significant markup, which can be far less favourable than the rate your own bank would provide. In many cases, you end up paying the DCC markup in addition to your bank's standard foreign transaction fee, effectively getting charged twice for the conversion. Always choose to pay in the local currency to get a better rate.
