Understanding the Entry Routes
There is no single path to joining ISRO. The most common entry point for technical roles is through the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB), which conducts nationwide exams for various positions. Another significant route is direct recruitment based
on performance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). For certain research-focused roles, candidates may join through fellowships or after completing studies at affiliated institutions like the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST). Core Educational Qualifications
For the coveted Scientist/Engineer 'SC' position, the fundamental requirement is a B.E./B.Tech degree or its equivalent in specific disciplines like Electronics, Mechanical, or Computer Science Engineering. Candidates must have secured a minimum aggregate of 65% marks or a CGPA of 6.84 on a 10-point scale. For roles like Technical Assistant, a first-class Diploma in Engineering is required, while Scientific Assistant positions typically ask for a first-class B.Sc degree. Higher positions, such as Scientist/Engineer 'SD', often require postgraduate qualifications like an M.E./M.Tech or a PhD in a relevant field.
Age Limits and Relaxations
The upper age limit for applying for a Scientist/Engineer 'SC' role is generally 28 years for unreserved category candidates, as of the closing date of the application. However, as per government norms, there are relaxations for reserved categories. The upper age limit is extended to 31 years for OBC candidates and 33 years for SC/ST candidates for posts reserved for them. Age relaxations are also applicable for ex-servicemen and persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) according to official orders.
The Competitive Selection Process
The selection process at ISRO is designed to be highly competitive to filter for the best talent. For many Scientist/Engineer recruitments, the process involves two primary stages. The first stage can be either a written test conducted by ICRB or shortlisting based on valid GATE scores. Following this, shortlisted candidates are called for an in-person interview. For some recruitments, the final selection gives equal weightage to both the GATE score and the interview performance.
