Visas and Getting There
For Indian travellers, it's essential to check the latest visa regulations before booking. As of August 2026, the visa rules have been subject to change, so consulting the official Royal Thai Embassy website is crucial. While visa-free schemes have been in place,
policies can shift. Regardless of the visa situation, all travellers must fill out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before their flight. To start your journey affordably, look for flights from major Indian cities into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), as these hubs offer numerous connections to the rest of the country.
Chiang Mai: Northern Charm on a Shoestring
Chiang Mai is renowned for being budget-friendly. Accommodation in the Old City or the trendy Nimman area is plentiful and cheap. A dorm bed can cost as little as $6-$10 per night, while a private room in a guesthouse is often available for $18-$35. Food is another area where you can save significantly. A delicious and filling bowl of the city's signature dish, khao soi, can be found at street stalls for 50–70 THB. In general, expect to pay 40-75 THB for a meal at a local market. For activities, exploring the ancient temples within the Old City walls is mostly free. For local transport, the iconic red trucks, or 'songthaews', are the cheapest option, with shared rides around the main city areas costing a flat rate of around 30 THB.
Krabi: Coastal Beauty for Less
While island destinations can be pricier, Krabi offers great value. To save on accommodation, consider staying in Krabi Town or a block or two away from the main beach in Ao Nang. Guesthouses and budget hotels can be found for as little as $12-$18 per night. Like in the north, street food is your friend. Meals at local markets often range from 40-80 THB. Island hopping doesn't have to break the bank either. Instead of booking expensive tours, you can hire a local long-tail boat with a group to explore nearby islands like those on the popular 4 Islands tour, though be aware of national park fees. Many of the best activities, such as watching the sunset at Ao Nang beach or climbing the steps to the Tiger Cave Temple, are completely free.
The North-to-South Journey
Connecting the mountainous north with the southern beaches is surprisingly straightforward. While options like a 30-hour bus exist, the fastest and most cost-effective method is flying. Budget airlines like Thai AirAsia operate direct flights between Chiang Mai (CNX) and Krabi (KBV). The flight takes just under three hours. If you book in advance, you can find one-way fares for as low as $70-$85, making it a far more efficient choice than spending over a day on ground transportation. This allows you to maximize your time enjoying the destinations rather than travelling between them.
Smart Spending Tips for Thailand
To make your budget stretch further, embrace local customs. Use songthaews for short distances and always have small bills ready for payment. In markets, it's acceptable to bargain politely, but do so with a smile. Eating at street stalls and local markets instead of tourist-focused restaurants will cut your food budget by more than half; a meal that costs 100–150 THB in a tourist zone might be 45–60 THB in a local area. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are also available and can be cheaper than tuk-tuks, especially for longer distances or late at night. By making these small adjustments, you can enjoy an incredible, multi-destination Thai adventure without a hefty price tag.
