What Makes the Queen So Regal?
At first glance, the Queen Pineapple distinguishes itself from its more common cousins. It's typically smaller and more compact, with a striking golden-yellow hue when ripe. But its real majesty lies in the eating experience. The flesh is renowned for
being exceptionally sweet, wonderfully aromatic, and possessing a delightfully crisp texture. Unlike the sometimes fibrous texture of larger varieties, the Queen is celebrated for being less fibrous and having a core that is often tender enough to eat. This combination of intense sweetness and satisfying crunch is what makes it a fresh-fruit favourite, considered by many to be superior for eating raw.
A GI-Tagged Treasure from Tripura
This exceptional fruit is not just a random variety; it's a recognised agricultural treasure of India, specifically from the state of Tripura. The unique agro-climatic conditions of the region—hilly terrain, fertile soil, and abundant rainfall—are ideal for its cultivation, which often employs organic farming practices. In recognition of its distinct qualities tied to this specific geography, the Queen Pineapple was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2015 and was declared the state fruit of Tripura in 2018. This tag ensures that only pineapples grown in this region, adhering to specific standards, can carry the 'Queen' name, protecting its heritage and guaranteeing its quality for consumers.
Boosting a Local Economy
The cultivation of the Queen Pineapple is more than just agriculture; it's the backbone of livelihood for thousands of farmers in Tripura, a significant percentage of whom belong to tribal communities. Recognizing its potential, the government has launched initiatives like 'Mission Queen Pineapple' to bolster the entire value chain, from farm to market. Recent plans announced in June 2026 aim to expand cultivation area and establish processing units to extract bromelain, an enzyme with applications in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. These efforts are designed to boost farmer incomes, enhance export infrastructure, and establish the Tripura Queen as a formidable global brand.
More Than Just Sweetness
Beyond its superior taste, the Queen Pineapple packs a significant nutritional punch. Like other pineapples, it is an excellent source of Vitamin C, a vital antioxidant that supports the immune system and skin health. It also contains the enzyme bromelain, which is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to aid in digestion by helping to break down proteins. The fruit is also a good source of manganese, potassium, and other essential vitamins and minerals that contribute to heart health and overall well-being.
How to Best Enjoy the Queen
While its superior sweetness makes it perfect for eating fresh, the Queen Pineapple’s utility doesn't end there. To truly appreciate its flavour, start by simply slicing it and enjoying it raw. Its crispness holds up well, making it a star on its own. For a simple upgrade, try grilling slices to caramelise their natural sugars, creating a perfect accompaniment to ice cream or savoury dishes. Because of its intense flavour, it also makes for an exceptional juice, jam, or addition to a tropical fruit salad where its unique aroma can shine. When selecting one, look for a fruit with a vibrant golden-orange colour that feels slightly soft when squeezed and emits a sweet fragrance from its base.
