More Than Just a Layover
The philosophy of what an airport should be is changing. Once seen as purely functional transit points, leading international hubs are now transforming into destinations in their own right, and families are at the heart of this evolution. Airport operators
have recognised a simple truth: stressed parents rushing to a gate don't spend time or money. Relaxed families, however, are more likely to shop, dine, and enjoy the facilities. This has sparked a global trend in creating environments that cater specifically to the needs of travellers with children, turning dreaded layovers into welcome breaks.
Where Play is the Priority
One of the most significant developments is the rise of high-quality play areas. Airports like Singapore's Changi, consistently ranked among the world's best, have set a high bar. Changi features multiple themed playgrounds, a four-story slide, and even a butterfly garden, offering countless ways for kids to burn off pre-flight energy. Similarly, Istanbul Airport boasts 11 dedicated play areas, while Hamad International Airport in Doha integrates artistic sculptures that double as whimsical climbing frames. These spaces are a win-win: children are entertained and physically active, and parents get a much-needed opportunity to relax before boarding.
Comfort and Care for the Smallest Travellers
Beyond play, airports are focusing on the fundamental needs of infants and their parents. The days of changing a nappy on a cramped bathroom counter are numbered. Leading airports now offer dedicated parent rooms or family toilets that are clean, private, and well-equipped. Facilities at airports like Seoul Incheon and Paris Charles de Gaulle include comfortable seating for nursing, changing stations, and sometimes even microwaves and cribs. Many airports, including Hamad International and London Heathrow, also provide complimentary strollers, easing the burden of navigating long terminal corridors with a toddler in tow.
Streamlining the Airport Journey
The focus on families extends to logistical support that simplifies the entire airport process. Dedicated family lanes for security and immigration are becoming more common in Europe and have been rolled out at many US airports, reducing the stress of long queues. Dining options are also evolving, with more restaurants offering kid-friendly menus and seating. These thoughtful conveniences demonstrate a deeper understanding that a smooth journey for children means a better experience for everyone. Some airports even provide sensory rooms for neurodivergent children, showcasing a growing commitment to inclusive travel.
Indian Hubs Are Stepping Up
This global trend is firmly taking root in India. In a recent 2026 ranking, both Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) and Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) placed in the world's top five for family-friendliness. Hyderabad was noted for its play areas and stroller services, while Bengaluru's Terminal 2, known as a 'Terminal in a Garden', offers a naturally calming environment. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) recently launched its 'Family@DEL' initiative, which includes dedicated check-in counters, priority security, and buggy support for families. These developments show that major Indian airports are not just catching up but are actively competing to provide a world-class experience for family travellers.
