The New Reality: Spend-Based Access
The biggest change for most credit and debit card holders is the shift to a spend-based model for complimentary lounge access. Previously, simply holding a certain type of card was enough to grant you a set number of visits per quarter. Now, banks are
increasingly requiring users to meet a minimum spending threshold in the preceding quarter to unlock this benefit for the next one. For instance, a bank might require a spend of ₹5,000 to ₹75,000 in a three-month period to qualify for lounge access in the subsequent quarter. This move is designed to curb overcrowding and ensure the perk is reserved for active, higher-spending customers. Several banks, including HDFC Bank, SBI Card, and Axis Bank, have implemented such changes, affecting a wide range of cards.
Strategy 1: Consolidate and Conquer
Instead of spreading your expenses across multiple cards, the most effective strategy now is to consolidate your spending onto one primary card. Channel all your regular payments—from groceries and utilities to online shopping and dining—through a single credit card that has a decent lounge program. This concentrates your spending, making it significantly easier to hit the quarterly minimum spend requirement. Before doing this, review the terms of your cards. Identify which one offers the best lounge benefits for a realistic spending target and make it your default payment method for all transactions. This disciplined approach ensures your everyday spending actively works towards unlocking your travel perks.
Strategy 2: Upgrade to a Mid-Tier or Premium Card
While many entry-level cards have had their lounge benefits removed or restricted, premium and some mid-tier cards often retain more generous access. Cards with annual fees, such as the HDFC Diners Club Black or ICICI Bank Sapphiro, frequently offer unlimited or a higher number of complimentary visits without stringent spending criteria. While paying an annual fee might seem counterintuitive, young professionals who travel frequently may find the value of the lounge access, combined with other perks like better reward points and lower forex markup, easily outweighs the yearly cost. Do the maths: if a single paid lounge visit costs between ₹1,500 and ₹3,500, a card with a ₹3,000 annual fee that provides multiple visits quickly pays for itself.
Strategy 3: Look Beyond Credit Cards
Credit cards are not the only path to a pre-flight oasis. Several other options exist. Some premium bank accounts, for instance, come with debit cards that offer lounge access, often tied to maintaining a certain minimum balance. Independent lounge membership programs like Priority Pass can also be purchased directly, giving you access to a global network of lounges for an annual fee. Furthermore, if you fly frequently with a specific airline, achieving a certain level of elite status in their loyalty program can grant you access to their exclusive lounges. Lastly, for infrequent travellers, simply buying a day pass at the lounge entrance is always an option.
Strategy 4: Choose Cards with No Spend Requirement
Despite the broad trend of spend-based conditions, a handful of credit cards still offer complimentary lounge access without any minimum spending hurdles. These are increasingly rare but are the gold standard for those who want predictable access without constantly tracking their expenses. Premium cards like the PNB Luxura Premium Metal Credit Card or HDFC Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card are examples that, as of mid-2026, offered a set number of visits without prerequisite spending. Even some lifetime-free cards, like the IndusInd Bank Tiger Credit Card, may offer a couple of visits per quarter without a spend condition, making them excellent choices for those who qualify.
