Why November is Prime Time
November marks the perfect window for a jungle safari. The parks, having been closed for the monsoon, are lush and rejuvenated. The weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for long hours in an open-air jeep. While the dense foliage can make tracking a fun
challenge, the replenished waterholes attract a wide variety of animals. It’s a fantastic time for birdwatching as migratory species begin to arrive, and the forest feels alive. Most core safari zones in Central India's national parks open in October, making November the first full month of the new season.
Kanha Tiger Reserve: The Kiplingesque Escape
Famous for its sprawling meadows and dense Sal forests, Kanha is one of India's largest and most scenic parks, providing the backdrop for Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'. It's also a conservation success story, having saved the Hard Ground Barasingha from near-extinction. Getting here is straightforward. By Air: Jabalpur Airport (JLR) is the nearest, located about 160-170 km away, which translates to a 3 to 4-hour drive to the main Khatia gate. Nagpur (NAG) and Raipur (RPR) are also viable options, approximately a 5 to 6-hour drive away. By Rail: Jabalpur is the most convenient major railway station, with excellent connectivity to cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The onward road journey takes about 4 hours. For those heading to the Mukki gate, Gondia station is closer, at about a 3-hour drive.
Bandhavgarh National Park: The Tiger Capital
Bandhavgarh is renowned for having one of the highest densities of tigers in India, making it a top choice for those hoping for a sighting. Its hilly terrain, ancient fort, and mix of forest and grassland provide a dramatic safari experience. Its accessibility is a major plus for a quick trip. By Air: Jabalpur Airport (JLR) is the primary gateway, situated around 190 km from the park. The drive from the airport to the main park entrance at Tala takes approximately 4 hours. By Rail: The closest station is Umaria (UMR), just 35 km away, requiring a short 45-minute drive. However, Katni Junction (KTE), about 100 km away, offers better connectivity with major train routes across India and is a popular alternative.
Pench Tiger Reserve: Land of Mowgli
Straddling the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, Pench's landscape of teak forests and open country is another contender for the 'Jungle Book' setting. The Pench river, which snakes through the park, is its lifeline. Its strategic location makes it one of the most accessible parks in the region. By Air: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur (NAG) is the closest and most convenient airport, at a distance of about 130 km. The drive to the main Turia gate is smooth and takes under 3 hours, thanks to an excellent highway. By Rail: Nagpur Junction is the best-connected railway station, with trains arriving from all over India. From there, it's a simple taxi ride to your lodge. The Seoni railway station is technically closer but has limited train connections.
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: The Rising Star
Located in Maharashtra, Tadoba has quickly gained a reputation for frequent and high-quality tiger sightings, especially in the hotter months. Its mix of dry deciduous forests, wetlands, and lakes supports a rich diversity of wildlife. Excellent connectivity from Nagpur makes it a top weekend choice for many. By Air: Nagpur Airport (NAG) is the undisputed gateway to Tadoba. The distance to the various entry gates ranges from 120 km to 180 km, with drive times between 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The Kolara and Moharli gates are the most popular entry points. By Rail: Chandrapur station (CD), at about 45 km from the Moharli gate, is the nearest major railhead with good connectivity. The drive is a little over an hour. Warora (WRR) is another option. Many visitors, however, prefer to take a train to the better-connected Nagpur and then travel by road.
