Ayodhya's Deepotsav is a breathtaking spectacle of light, faith, and celebration. But with over 2.5 million people expected, navigating the city requires a solid plan. This guide offers essential advice to manage your travel and enjoy the festival.
Understanding the 2026 Schedule and Scale
The
10th annual Deepotsav in 2026 is a multi-day event, with the main attraction—the mass lighting of diyas—scheduled for the evening of Saturday, November 7, on the eve of Diwali. Events often run from November 5 to November 8. The centrepiece is the lighting of lakhs of lamps along Ram ki Paidi and other ghats on the Saryu River, creating a Guinness World Record-attempting display. The evening also features a grand Saryu Aarti, cultural processions (Shobha Yatra), laser shows, and drone formations telling the story of the Ramayana. Given the immense crowds, authorities implement significant restrictions, making advance planning crucial for a smooth experience.
Getting to Ayodhya: Book Far in Advance
Ayodhya is accessible by air, rail, and road, but all options require early booking for the festival period. Flights into Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya sell out quickly. Lucknow's airport (135 km away) is a viable alternative. Indian Railways schedules special festival trains, but even these, along with regular services like the Vande Bharat Express to Ayodhya Dham Junction (AY), are fully booked weeks ahead. If travelling by road from nearby cities like Lucknow, Gorakhpur, or Varanasi, be prepared for highway diversions as you approach Ayodhya. Heavy commercial vehicles are often rerouted, and passenger buses may terminate at peripheral parking lots.
Navigating Ayodhya: Expect to Walk
During the peak festival days, especially November 7, central Ayodhya effectively becomes a pedestrian-only zone. Private cars and taxis are typically halted at outer barriers, such as the Saket Petrol Pump checkpoint and Tedhi Bazar. From these points, expect to walk 2-3 kilometers to reach the main ghats and temples. While some registered local e-rickshaws and shuttle services will operate, they are often overwhelmed. The best strategy is to wear comfortable footwear and be prepared to walk. If you have a hotel booking within the restricted zone, you might be allowed entry, but typically only if you arrive before the barriers are sealed in the morning. It's vital to pre-arrange a specific meeting point and time with your driver for your return journey, as mobile networks can be unreliable in dense crowds.
Accommodation: The Golden Rule is to Book Early
Finding a place to stay is one of the biggest challenges. Hotels and dharamshalas near Ram Path, Naya Ghat, and the Ram Janmabhoomi temple are the most convenient but are often booked out months in advance. Ayodhya Cantt (formerly Faizabad), a few kilometres away, offers more options, but you'll still need to navigate traffic restrictions on the main evening. Booking accommodation inside the main pedestrianised zone is ideal as it eliminates travel hassles on the big day. For any booking, confirm how close vehicles can get on festival days. Booking three to four weeks in advance is the bare minimum recommendation.
Experiencing the Sights: A Two_Part Strategy
To avoid exhaustion, split your sightseeing. Plan your temple visits for the mornings of November 6th or 7th. Go early for darshan at the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir and Hanuman Garhi to avoid the worst queues. Remember that bags and phones may need to be deposited, so travel light. Reserve the afternoon and evening of November 7 for the Deepotsav itself. Reach your chosen viewing spot by mid_afternoon (around 3 PM) to secure a decent position. While Ram ki Paidi is the main venue, access is often restricted to pass_holders. Many visitors find excellent views from the Naya Ghat side, across the river, or on bridges, where large LED screens also broadcast the main event.
Safety and Practical Tips
Crowd management is a major operation, with the city divided into security zones. Always follow police directions. Keep children and elderly family members close, and establish a clear meeting point in case you get separated. Carry essentials like water, a light shawl for the cool evening, a power bank, and any necessary medications. Be mindful of your belongings in crowded areas. For a less intense experience, consider visiting on the days just before or after the main event on November 7. The city is still beautifully illuminated and festive but far easier to navigate, which is an ideal option for those travelling with elderly parents or young children.
