The Golden Queen's Coronation
At the heart of this movement is the magnificent Queen Pineapple. Declared Tripura's state fruit in 2018, this isn't just any pineapple. It earned the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, a recognition of its unique quality tied directly to its origin.
The Queen variety is celebrated for its golden-yellow hue, exceptional sweetness, pleasant aroma, and a low-fibre texture that makes it a juicy delight. Unlike other varieties, it is cultivated using largely organic methods, taking advantage of the region's fertile soil and ample rainfall, which enhances its distinct flavour. For generations, local farmers knew they had something special, but now, thanks to concerted efforts, the rest of the world is starting to agree.
A Moment Fueled by Mission
This isn't an accidental trend. It's the result of strategic planning and ambition. The recent buzz is strongly linked to initiatives like the 'Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2026', held in New Delhi to showcase the fruit to a national and international audience. The festival, coinciding with International Pineapple Day, brings farmers, buyers, and policymakers together, aiming to build lasting connections between Tripura's growers and the global market. Furthermore, the government has launched 'Mission Queen Pineapple', a major project with an investment of over ₹230 crore aimed at boosting production, processing, branding, and exports. The goal is to expand cultivation, develop a robust farm-to-market supply chain with modern infrastructure like pack houses and refrigerated transport, and significantly increase the fruit's economic value.
Beyond the Pineapple: Jackfruit's Journey
While the Queen Pineapple reigns supreme, it’s not the only fruit from Tripura making waves. The state's sweet and flavourful jackfruit is also finding its way to international tables. In recent years, consignments of fresh jackfruit have been exported to global hubs like London, Dubai, and even Germany for the first time. This marks a significant step in diversifying Tripura's fruit export basket. These initiatives, often facilitated by farmer-producer organisations and government bodies, help ensure that the state's agricultural richness is showcased through more than just one hero product. Along with jackfruit, fragrant lemons from the state have also been sent abroad on a trial basis, hinting at a broader horticultural ambition.
Economic Sweetness for Farmers
This growing recognition is about more than just culinary praise; it’s about transforming livelihoods. For thousands of farmers in Tripura, a majority of whom belong to tribal communities, pineapple cultivation is a vital source of income. The push for exports and better market linkages means higher prices and a more stable income. Initiatives like 'Mission Queen Pineapple' are designed to reduce post-harvest losses and connect farmers directly with processors and exporters, cutting out intermediaries and boosting their earnings. The government's plan includes not just selling fresh fruit but also promoting value-added products like juices, jams, and even extracting bromelain, an enzyme used in pharmaceuticals, from pineapples. This creates a more resilient rural economy and ensures that the benefits of this 'food moment' are felt directly in the farming communities.
A New Chapter for Northeast Produce
Tripura's success story is part of a wider trend of growing appreciation for the unique agricultural products of India's Northeast. The region's distinct climate and traditional farming practices yield produce with exceptional qualities that are increasingly sought after. From Assam's 'Bao-dhaan' red rice to Tripura's golden pineapples, there is a clear move to bring these local treasures into the national and global mainstream. This focus not only helps the local economy but also enriches the country's culinary landscape, offering consumers new tastes and stories rooted in the rich biodiversity of the Northeast.
