Fresh Gateways to the Middle East
The skies between India and the Middle East just got busier with two new airline entries. Saudi Arabia's low-cost carrier, flyadeal, made its India debut with the launch of daily direct flights connecting Hyderabad and Riyadh. The inaugural flight landed
on July 6, signaling a new, affordable option for business travellers, expatriates, and tourists. This new service enhances Hyderabad's connectivity to the region and provides onward travel options within Saudi Arabia. Adding to the excitement, the new premium Saudi carrier Riyadh Air has also announced its entry into the Indian market. It is launching daily direct flights between Mumbai and Riyadh, starting from August 4. Bookings for these flights, operated on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, opened on July 6. This move aims to cater to the significant demand for travel to Saudi Arabia and also positions Riyadh as a convenient hub for connections to Europe and other global destinations.
Air India's European Summer Boost
For those dreaming of a European holiday, Air India has significantly ramped up its services. The airline has bolstered its presence to meet sustained high demand for travel between India and Europe. Starting in late June, Air India increased its non-stop services from Delhi to both Amsterdam and Milan to daily flights. Previously, these routes were operated four and five times a week, respectively. Furthermore, connectivity to Scandinavia has also improved, with the Delhi to Copenhagen route now operating five times a week as of early July. This expansion complements the airline's launch of daily non-stop flights to Zurich, which began in mid-June. With these additions, Air India now operates a robust schedule of 80 flights per week to seven key destinations in mainland Europe, offering travellers greater choice and flexibility.
IndiGo’s Ambitious Global Push
India's largest carrier, IndiGo, is embarking on a major international expansion, adding a host of new destinations to its already vast network. The airline has its sights set on long-haul routes, with plans to launch services to European cities like London, Manchester, and Amsterdam. These routes are part of a strategy to capture a larger share of the international travel market from India. Beyond Europe, the expansion also targets Southeast Asia, with new connections to popular leisure spots like Bali (Denpasar), Penang, and Langkawi. Much of this growth has been centered around major hubs like Bengaluru, which has seen a significant increase in international flight frequencies. The airline’s strategy is clear: to connect India to the world with a mix of affordable short-haul and long-haul options, aiming to fly nearly 30% of its capacity on international routes.
Domestic Travel Gets a Premium Makeover
The changes aren't just limited to international skies. The ongoing merger of Vistara with Air India is leading to a significant upgrade in domestic travel, particularly between major metro cities. Starting late last year, Air India began deploying former Vistara A320neo aircraft on high-demand routes connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. What does this mean for passengers? These aircraft are configured with a three-class cabin—Business, Premium Economy, and Economy—bringing a more consistent and premium product to some of the country's busiest flight paths. With thousands of additional premium seats now available weekly on routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Bengaluru, flyers can expect an elevated experience that includes better cabin interiors and complimentary hot meals, consolidating the best of both full-service carriers into a single, enhanced offering.
