The Ultimate Trophy Magnet
In the star-studded galaxy of the IPL, some players are defined by their individual brilliance, while others carve a niche through sheer team success. Karn Sharma, 38, belongs firmly in the latter category. The leg-spinner hangs up his boots with a staggering
four IPL winner's medals, a feat many of the league's biggest names have yet to achieve. His crowning achievement is a unique hat-trick of titles with three different franchises: Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, Mumbai Indians in 2017, and Chennai Super Kings in 2018. He added a fourth championship with CSK in 2021, cementing his legacy not as a leading superstar, but as a priceless lucky charm and a dependable team man who knew how to win.
A Journeyman's Tale of Success
Born in Meerut, Karn Sharma’s journey was that of a quintessential domestic workhorse. He began his career with Railways in 2007, and his breakthrough 2012-13 domestic season, where he took 21 wickets in just three matches, put him on the national radar. This performance led to a massive payday at the 2014 IPL auction, where Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for ₹3.75 crore, making him the highest-paid uncapped player at the time. Over the years, he became a familiar face across the league, also plying his trade for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in addition to his title-winning stints. While never the undisputed lead spinner, captains valued his ability to control the middle overs and chip in with crucial wickets, making him a sought-after component of a championship puzzle.
A Brief but Memorable Stint in Blue
His consistent IPL performances earned him the ultimate honour: a call-up to the Indian national team in 2014. Though his international career was brief, he achieved the rare distinction of representing India in all three formats. Sharma played one Test against Australia in Adelaide, two One-Day Internationals, and one T20 International. While he couldn't cement his place in a side that featured established spinners, earning the India Test cap (No. 283) remains a moment he calls one of the most special of his career. It was a fitting reward for his years of toil on the domestic circuit and his impact in the world's premier T20 league.
The Final Over
Sharma announced his decision to retire from all forms of the game following a UP T20 League match on August 22, 2026, stating his final professional game would be on August 25. In his retirement announcement, he expressed gratitude to his family, the BCCI, and the various state associations he represented, including Railways, Andhra, and Vidarbha. He noted his desire to make way for younger talent, stating, "My station has arrived, I am already 38 and I feel there is no point in playing anymore. The more I play, I will occupy the place of a young player." It’s a typically understated end to a career that was anything but ordinary.
