The New Flight Connection
Gone are the days of tedious multi-leg journeys involving trains or flights to Surat followed by a road trip. Alliance Air has launched direct, non-stop flights from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport to Daman's NAMO Airport. The flight takes
approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes, effectively saving travellers more than 10 hours of commute time. These flights currently operate twice a week, making a long weekend trip a convenient reality. This new service is a game-changer, integrating Daman into the national aviation network and opening it up for quick, hassle-free tourism from the capital.
Why Daman for a Short Break?
Daman offers a unique blend of sun, sea, and history. Its Portuguese colonial past is visible in its magnificent forts, grand churches, and quiet alleyways. This heritage, combined with serene beaches and a reputation for fresh, delicious seafood, creates a compelling destination. Unlike more crowded coastal spots, Daman provides a slower, more relaxed pace of life. It's the perfect setting to unwind, explore historical ruins, and enjoy the coastal breeze without the long travel time previously required. A two or three-day trip is ideal to cover the main attractions at a leisurely pace.
Exploring Daman’s Two Beaches
Daman's coastline is dominated by two primary beaches, each with a distinct character. Jampore Beach, in the south, is the one for classic beach activities. It features a wide, sandy shore with calm waters, making it suitable for swimming. You can indulge in water sports, take a camel ride, or simply relax at one of the many beach shacks. In contrast, Devka Beach is a rocky shoreline best known for its beautiful promenade, musical fountains, and amusement park. While swimming is not advised here due to the rocks, it comes alive in the evening, making it the perfect spot for a sunset stroll and street food.
A Journey Through History
To truly experience Daman, you must explore its historical quarters. The territory is divided by the Daman Ganga River into Nani Daman (Little Daman) and Moti Daman (Big Daman). Moti Daman is home to a massive 16th-century fort with imposing walls, a lighthouse, and several administrative buildings. Inside the fort, the Basilica of Bom Jesus stands as a stunning example of Portuguese baroque architecture. On the other side, Nani Daman features the St. Jerome Fort, which offers panoramic views of the river and the fishing boats.
A Taste of the Coast
Daman is a paradise for seafood lovers. The local cuisine is a flavourful mix of Gujarati, Maharashtrian, and Portuguese influences. Freshly caught fish and prawns are staples here. Don't leave without trying dishes like Prawns Koliwada, Pomfret Fry, and the regional specialty, Bombil Fry (Bombay Duck). Many beachside shacks and local restaurants, such as Daman Delite, serve these delicacies. For vegetarians, the strong Gujarati influence ensures there are plenty of delicious options available at most eateries.
