Stay Updated on Special Train Schedules
Indian Railways has announced a massive rollout of summer special trains, with over 18,000 trips scheduled between April and July 2026 to manage the seasonal rush. These trains are not just for holiday travellers; they are a vital resource for students
travelling for entrance exams, returning from hostels, or heading on educational tours. The key is to stay informed. Regularly check the official Indian Railways website, the IRCTC portal, and the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app for the latest announcements on these special services. Zonal railways also issue press releases, so following their official social media accounts can provide timely updates on new trains, extended runs, and booking availability.
Master the Booking Process
Getting a confirmed seat is the biggest challenge during peak season. For summer special trains in 2026, bookings open 60 days in advance. Mark your calendar and be ready to book at 8:00 AM on the opening day, as seats on popular routes fill up within minutes. Keep your IRCTC account details, passenger information, and payment methods ready to go. If you don't get a confirmed ticket, don't lose hope. Opt for the VIKALP scheme during booking, which can allot you a confirmed berth on an alternate train if one is available. Also, monitor the ticket status closely, as many waitlisted tickets get confirmed closer to the journey date, especially after the final chart preparation.
Unlock Student Concessions
One of the most underutilised benefits is the student concession offered by Indian Railways. General category students can get a 50% discount, while SC/ST students are eligible for a 75% concession on the base fare for Second Class and Sleeper Class tickets. This is applicable for travel to hometowns during vacations and for educational tours. Girls in government schools in rural areas travelling for national-level entrance exams for medical or engineering can also get a 75% concession. To avail this, you need a specific form from your educational institution. It's important to note that this concession is generally applied to counter-booked tickets (I-tickets) and not e-tickets, so you'll have to visit a reservation office.
Plan Your Entire Journey, Not Just the Train Ride
Smart travel planning extends beyond the railway track. Before booking, check the train’s arrival time at your destination. Arriving at an unfamiliar city in the middle of the night can be daunting and unsafe. If possible, choose a train that reaches during daylight hours. Research last-mile connectivity from the station to your exam centre or accommodation. Are there buses, auto-rickshaws, or metro services available? If you are unable to find a direct train, look for trains to the nearest major station and plan a connecting journey via bus or a local train from there.
Travel Light and Travel Safe
Packing light is always advisable for train travel, as it makes moving through crowded stations and finding space in the compartment much easier. Always secure your luggage with a chain and lock, especially on overnight journeys. Keep your valuables, phone, and wallet in a small bag that you can keep with you at all times. If you're travelling alone, inform your family of your train and coach number. It's also wise to pack some of your own food and water, even though many trains have pantry cars or vendors. This ensures you have something hygienic to eat in case of delays or if the available options aren't suitable.
