The New Audience Calculation: Screen vs Sofa
The decision to watch a movie is no longer just about interest; it's a complex calculation of cost, convenience, and experience. With the explosion of Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms in India, audiences have unprecedented access to a vast library of content
from the comfort of their sofas. This has fundamentally changed the value proposition of a trip to the multiplex. Before the pandemic, a theatrical release was the primary way to see a new film. Now, with movies arriving on streaming services within four to eight weeks of their cinema debut, many viewers simply choose to wait, especially for mid-budget dramas, comedies, or thrillers. This behavioural shift means that to justify the expense and effort—tickets, travel, and overpriced popcorn—a film must offer something that cannot be replicated on a television screen.
What Makes a Movie a 'Theatrical Event'?
The answer, increasingly, is spectacle. Large-scale action sequences, breathtaking visual effects (VFX), epic world-building, and star-studded casts are the key ingredients that define a 'theatrical event'. Films like 'RRR', 'KGF', 'Pathaan', and 'Jawan' became national phenomena because they offered an immersive, larger-than-life experience. The booming sound design, the gigantic screen, and the collective energy of a packed hall are part of the product. This trend is borne out by box office data. In the post-pandemic era, the top 10 highest-grossing films have consistently accounted for a disproportionately large share of the total box office revenue, climbing to 41% in 2024 from 28% in pre-pandemic 2019. This polarisation shows that audiences are selectively spending their money on guaranteed spectacles.
The Squeeze on Mid-Budget Cinema
This new reality has created a perilous environment for the mid-budget film—the kind of story-driven movie that used to be the backbone of the industry. Filmmakers and producers report that OTT platforms, which once championed smaller films, are now also demanding bigger stars and event-level concepts, making it difficult to get these projects greenlit or even find a distributor after completion. While there are exceptions, and strong content can still occasionally break through with positive word-of-mouth, the theatrical window is becoming an exclusive club. The industry's reliance on these few massive hits a year creates a high-risk, high-reward environment, leaving less room for experimentation and diverse storytelling in the theatrical space. Many of these stories now find their primary, and sometimes only, audience directly online.
The Economic Reality of a Multiplex Visit
We cannot ignore the simple economics. For a family of four, a single trip to a multiplex in a major city can easily cost upwards of ₹2,000 to ₹3,000, including tickets and concessions. In contrast, a monthly subscription to multiple OTT services costs a fraction of that, offering unlimited entertainment. This stark cost difference forces audiences to be highly discerning. A film must not only be good; it must be an 'event' worthy of the significant expense. This economic pressure is a powerful force driving viewers towards either the guaranteed blockbuster experience in the theatre or the cost-effective comfort of home streaming, leaving little room in between.
The Path Forward: Reimagining the Experience
The trend doesn't necessarily spell doom for cinemas, but it does demand adaptation. The multiplex is no longer just a place to watch a film; it must be a premium destination for an unmissable cultural event. This could mean investing in better technology, more comfortable seating, and a wider variety of experiences. For filmmakers, the challenge is twofold: creating spectacles that demand a big screen, while also producing compelling narratives for streaming platforms. The co-existence of both mediums is the new normal. The audience has spoken with their wallets and their remotes: they want spectacle at the cinema and stories at home. The industry's future depends on its ability to deliver on both fronts.
