A Surge in Seasonal Hiring
India is anticipating a significant boost in temporary employment for the 2026 festive period, with estimates suggesting the creation of 250,000 to 270,000 seasonal and gig jobs. This represents a projected growth of 15-20% in festive hiring compared
to the previous year, which saw an estimated 216,000 similar roles created. This annual surge is primarily driven by sectors that experience a massive spike in consumer demand between August and December, including e-commerce, quick commerce, logistics, and organised retail. Companies are ramping up their workforce to manage everything from increased website traffic to ensuring gifts and goods reach doorsteps on time.
The E-commerce and Logistics Engine
E-commerce giants are at the forefront of this hiring wave. Flipkart has announced plans to create over 250,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, while Amazon India is adding more than 160,000 seasonal roles. These jobs are essential to the complex machinery of online retail. The core of the demand lies in logistics and last-mile delivery, where hiring is expected to increase by 30-35%. Roles such as warehouse pickers, packers, sortation staff, and delivery executives form the backbone of the festive sales period, ensuring that the journey of a product from a fulfilment center to a customer's home is as swift as possible.
Beyond the Metros
A notable trend this year is the geographical distribution of these new jobs. The festive hiring boom is no longer just a metropolitan story. Tier-II and Tier-III cities are expected to account for around 45% of the total workforce demand. Cities like Lucknow, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, and Indore are becoming significant employment hubs. This shift is driven by the expansion of e-commerce reach, the growth of organised retail, and the establishment of regional fulfilment networks designed to bring services closer to a wider customer base. For companies, this decentralisation is a strategic move to promise and execute faster deliveries across the country.
The Roles in Demand
The headline roles are in delivery, warehousing, and customer support, but the job landscape is becoming more specialised. While traditional roles like last-mile delivery partners and warehouse associates remain critical, new-age operational roles are seeing growth of 15-20%. These include positions like dark-store inventory controllers, returns and refunds specialists, and marketplace operations professionals. On the customer-facing side, support executives are vital for handling increased queries, managing order issues, and ensuring a positive customer experience during the high-pressure sales period. These temporary positions are also becoming an important entry point into the formal workforce for many, with reports suggesting nearly a quarter of seasonal associates could transition into longer-term assignments.
Salaries and Incentives
The intense competition for temporary workers is pushing wages higher. On average, temporary workers in metro areas could see their wages rise by 12-15%, while those in smaller cities might command an 8-10% increase. Reports indicate that roles in e-commerce and logistics are among the highest paying, with an average monthly compensation of around ₹24,266. In contrast, roles in organised retail stores may offer lower average salaries. To attract and retain talent during the peak season, companies are also offering attendance bonuses, productivity-linked incentives, and referral bonuses. For a delivery partner, realistic daily earnings on a busy day could range between ₹800 and ₹1,200, particularly in metro areas.
