The Reality of a Shrinking Landscape
Across India, a significant number of technical and engineering colleges are closing their doors. In the 2025-26 academic year alone, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved the 'progressive closure' of 58 institutions. This means
they can no longer admit new students, though current students will be able to graduate. States like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have seen the highest number of shutdowns. The reasons are varied, including low student enrollment in certain institutions, an inability to meet quality standards, faculty shortages, and financial issues. Simultaneously, the AICTE has also discontinued over 950 courses during the same period, further tightening the supply. This consolidation, partly driven by the new National Education Policy's focus on creating larger, multidisciplinary universities, is reshaping the educational map for aspiring students.
Why Competition for Top Courses Remains Fierce
Even as some colleges close, student demand for specific, career-focused courses is stronger than ever. Fields like Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Data Science, and Cybersecurity are seeing intense competition. This demand is fuelled by a job market that prioritises these skills, with projections showing a massive increase in roles for AI and data specialists in the coming years. Courses like B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering remain the most sought-after, with graduates commanding high salaries. However, even within premier institutions, some traditional engineering streams like textile or aerospace engineering are seeing comparatively less interest, highlighting a clear shift in student preferences towards tech-centric disciplines.
Check 1: The Institution’s Health and Accreditation
Before focusing on a course, the first and most critical step is to verify the institution's legitimacy and stability. Ensure the college and its courses are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and relevant professional bodies like AICTE. An unaccredited degree may not be valid for government jobs or further studies. Beyond recognition, look at its NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) grade and NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) ranking. While rankings aren't everything, they provide a benchmark for quality in teaching, research, and infrastructure. Given the closure trend, it's also wise to check the college's recent admission trends. A sharp fall in enrolment could be a red flag.
Check 2: The Course Curriculum's Relevance
A course title like 'Computer Science' can mean very different things at different colleges. It's crucial to scrutinise the curriculum to ensure it is modern and aligned with industry needs. Does the syllabus include modules on current topics like AI, cloud computing, or cybersecurity, or is it outdated? Many employers report a significant gap between what colleges teach and what the industry requires. A good program will feature industry collaborations, hands-on projects, and regular updates to its course content. Don't be afraid to ask the admissions department for a detailed syllabus and compare it with what other leading universities are offering.
Check 3: Placement Records Beyond the Headlines
Colleges often advertise impressive placement figures, but the details matter more than the headlines. Look beyond the 'highest package' offered and ask for the median or average salary, as this gives a more realistic picture of what most students earn. Crucially, find out what percentage of eligible students were actually placed through campus recruitment. Other important questions to ask include: Which companies visit the campus for recruitment? What roles are they hiring for? Does the college have a dedicated placement cell that provides training and support? A strong alumni network can also be a valuable resource for internships and job opportunities.
Check 4: Faculty Quality and Campus Infrastructure
The quality of your education depends heavily on the people who teach you. Research the qualifications and experience of the faculty members in the department you're interested in. University websites often list faculty profiles. A department with experienced professors who have industry or research backgrounds is a positive sign. Similarly, evaluate the infrastructure. For a technical course, this means well-equipped labs, a modern library with access to digital journals, and reliable campus-wide Wi-Fi. For students who may need to relocate, the quality and safety of hostel facilities are also a key consideration.
