facility, launched on July 31, 2026, integrates luggage booking directly into the IRCTC portal and the new RailOne app. This allows passengers with confirmed tickets to declare and pay for extra luggage online, streamlining the entire process and saving valuable time.
Know Your Free Luggage Allowance
Before you can book excess luggage, it’s crucial to know the standard free allowance, which varies by travel class. For AC First Class, the free limit is 70 kg. For AC 2-Tier and First Class, it’s 50 kg. Passengers in Sleeper Class, AC 3-Tier, and AC Chair Car get a 40 kg allowance, while those in Second Class can carry 35 kg for free. Anything beyond these weights is considered excess luggage and is chargeable. It's also important to note the size restrictions: standard bags should not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm.
How to Book Extra Luggage Online
The process is designed to be straightforward for anyone with a confirmed or RAC ticket. You can access the facility through the Indian Railways Parcel Portal or via the IRCTC website when managing your booking. After entering your journey details and the weight of your excess luggage, the portal will display the applicable charges. It will also show information on restricted items and penalty rules. This digital-first approach provides transparency and puts all necessary information at the passenger's fingertips before payment.
Understanding the Charges
The cost for carrying extra luggage is calculated at 1.5 times the normal luggage rate (Scale-L). The minimum charge for any excess luggage booking is ₹30. Charges are calculated in 10 kg slabs, and the minimum chargeable distance is 50 km. Failing to pre-book your excess luggage can be costly; if detected with unbooked extra bags during the journey, the penalty is six times the standard rate.
Which Classes Are Eligible?
The online booking service is available for passengers in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, First Class, Sleeper Class, and Second Class. However, it is not available for those travelling in AC 3-Tier, AC 3-Economy, and AC Chair Car. This is because for these classes, the maximum permissible luggage limit is the same as the free allowance (40 kg), so there is no provision for booking excess weight.
Final Steps at the Station
While the payment is online, one physical step remains. After booking online, passengers must print the e-forwarding note. This note, along with the luggage, needs to be presented at the station's parcel office for final weighing and verification before you can collect the Railway Receipt (RR) and proceed with your journey. It is recommended to do this at least 30 minutes before your train's scheduled departure.
