A new chapter in Indian Railways has begun with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai. This premium overnight train promises to redefine travel between India's tech hub and its financial capital.
Schedule and Timings
The inaugural train
was flagged off from Bengaluru's Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) on November 1, 2026. Regular services from Mumbai to Bengaluru will commence on November 2, with the Bengaluru to Mumbai service starting on November 3. The train will run six days a week. Train No. 27652 will depart from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day. In the return direction, Train No. 27651 will leave CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 PM and reach SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM (noon) the following day. The service will not operate on Mondays from Bengaluru and on Tuesdays from Mumbai. The journey is expected to take around 16 hours, a significant reduction compared to existing trains like the Udyan Express, which takes nearly 22-24 hours.
Route and Key Stoppages
Connecting the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, the train is set to improve connectivity across this vital economic corridor. The service has eight designated stops between the two terminuses: Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan. It's important for Bengaluru passengers to note that the service operates from SMVT at Baiyappanahalli, which is connected to the city's Purple Line metro, and not the KSR Bengaluru (Majestic) station. The reduced number of stops is a key factor in its faster journey time compared to other express trains on the route which can have over 30 halts.
A Look Inside: Features and Amenities
Designed for long-distance overnight comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper offers a significant upgrade over conventional trains. The train has a capacity of 823 passengers across three classes: AC First Class (1A), AC 2-Tier (2A), and AC 3-Tier (3A). Berths are designed to be wider and have better cushioning. Each berth is equipped with personal reading lights and charging sockets, including USB ports. Advanced features include sensor-based lighting, automated doors, bio-vacuum toilets with touch-free taps, and improved soundproofing for a quieter journey. For enhanced safety, the train is equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and advanced fire detection and suppression systems.
Fares and Booking Details
Ticket bookings for the new service have already opened. Fares vary by class. A journey from Bengaluru to Mumbai costs approximately ₹2,810 for AC 3rd Tier, ₹3,630 for AC 2nd Tier, and ₹4,450 for AC First Class. These fares are dynamic and may vary slightly. Onboard catering charges are typically additional to the base fare. While these prices are higher than older trains like the Udyan Express, they offer a competitive alternative to flights, especially when considering airport travel time and last minute booking costs. Tickets can be booked through the IRCTC website and mobile app. Given the high demand, initial services saw tickets being waitlisted within hours of opening, so planning ahead is advisable.
The Future of Overnight Travel
The Bengaluru–Mumbai service is part of a broader expansion of the Vande Bharat Sleeper network, which aims to gradually replace older premium trains like the Rajdhani Express in a phased manner. This launch follows the introduction of similar services on routes like Howrah–Guwahati and Varanasi–New Delhi. Railway officials have also announced plans for another Vande Bharat Sleeper from Bengaluru towards Hubballi, which will further enhance connectivity for North Karnataka. These self–propelled trainsets, which do not require a separate locomotive, allow for faster acceleration and deceleration, contributing to shorter journey times and improved operational efficiency.
