Planning an overnight train journey? You might want to charge your devices beforehand. Indian Railways is strictly enforcing a rule to switch off power outlets from 11 PM to 5 AM, a move that prioritises passenger safety over convenience.
Why The Sudden Enforcement?
This isn't a
new rule, but its enforcement has become a top priority for Indian Railways. The Railway Board issued a directive on October 26, 2026, to all zones, ordering strict compliance after a recent incident. On October 24, a passenger's power bank exploded while charging on the Mumbai-Howrah Mail, filling an AC coach with smoke and halting the train. This event served as a stark reminder of the potential fire hazards associated with unattended electronic devices charging overnight. The board has stated that no exceptions will be permitted and has called for surprise inspections to ensure the rule is followed.
A History of Fire Safety Concerns
The directive to disable charging points at night dates back to June 2014. The original decision was based on a recommendation from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) following a tragic fire in an AC coach of the Hazur Sahib Nanded-KSR Bengaluru Express in 2013. Over the years, other incidents have reinforced the need for this precaution. A significant fire in a sleeper coach of a Humsafar Clone Special in November 2023 also prompted the CRS to recommend extending the charging shutdown to non-AC sleeper coaches as well. Officials have noted that many minor fires on long-distance trains have been caused by overheating and overcharging of personal electronics.
The Logic: Preventing Overnight Risks
The core reason for the 11 PM to 5 AM shutdown is simple: risk mitigation. When passengers are asleep, charging devices are often left unattended for hours. This increases the danger of a potential malfunction, short circuit, or battery overheating going unnoticed until a fire has already started. By cutting power during these deep-night hours, the railways aim to eliminate this specific risk. The recent power bank explosion occurred around 3:38 AM, highlighting the exact scenario the rule is designed to prevent. Railway officials have emphasised that this is a critical precautionary measure to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
What This Means For Your Journey
For travellers, especially on long distance overnight routes, this means a shift in routine. The six hour window without access to charging sockets requires some planning. You will not be able to plug in your phone, laptop, or any other device during this period. The rule applies to all coaches across the network where charging points are available, including both AC and non AC classes. Power is expected to be restored after 5 AM by railway staff. While the use of your devices is not restricted, the ability to charge them is. This makes managing your device's battery life a crucial part of your travel preparation.
How to Prepare for Night Travel
A little preparation can help you navigate the charging blackout with ease. The most straightforward solution is to carry a fully charged power bank. This allows you to power up your devices without needing the train's sockets. Before boarding, ensure your mobile phone, laptop, and any other essential electronics are at 100% battery. Make use of the charging points during the day and evening, before the 11 PM cut off. Passengers are also advised to never leave devices charging unattended, even during the day, and to immediately report any signs of overheating, smoke, or a burning smell to the train staff.
