Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
High humidity means more sweat and oil production, which can mix with dirt and pollutants to clog pores. It's essential to cleanse your face twice a day to wash away this buildup. However, avoid harsh, stripping cleansers. Over-washing can damage your skin's
natural barrier, prompting it to produce even more oil. Opt for a gentle, pH-balanced, or soap-free cleanser. For those who wear makeup or sunscreen, double cleansing in the evening is a game-changer. Start with an oil-based cleanser to melt away products, followed by a water-based wash to purify the skin.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that you can skip moisturiser during the humid monsoon months. Your skin still needs hydration, but the rich, heavy creams you used in winter will feel suffocating and can block pores. The key is to switch to a lightweight, non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) formula. Gel-based or water-based moisturisers are perfect for this season, as they provide essential hydration without feeling greasy. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which draw moisture into the skin to keep it plump and balanced.
Don't Forget to Exfoliate
With an increase in dead skin cells and oil, exfoliation becomes crucial to prevent clogged pores, blackheads, and dullness. Aim to exfoliate once or twice a week with a mild product. Harsh physical scrubs can create micro-tears and irritate the skin, so consider gentle chemical exfoliants containing ingredients like salicylic acid (a BHA) or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid. These work to dissolve the bonds holding dead cells to the surface, revealing brighter, clearer skin.
Sunscreen Is Still Non-Negotiable
Don't let the cloudy skies fool you; harmful UV rays can easily penetrate through them and damage your skin. Sunscreen is a must-have all year round, including during the monsoon. Continuing to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protects your skin from tanning and premature ageing. To avoid a sticky finish, choose a lightweight, gel-based, or matte-finish formula that feels comfortable in humid conditions.
Keep Fungal Infections at Bay
The constant dampness of the monsoon creates a perfect breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. This makes skin prone to fungal infections like ringworm and athlete's foot, especially in skin folds, underarms, and feet. To prevent this, focus on keeping your skin dry. Change out of wet clothes or sweaty gym gear as soon as possible. Wearing breathable cotton fabrics can help improve air circulation. Using an antifungal powder on sweat-prone areas can also be a helpful preventive measure.
Rethink Your Diet and Hydration
What you eat has a direct impact on your skin's health. During the monsoon, try to limit your intake of oily and sugary foods, which can aggravate acne. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, like those containing vitamins A, C, and E. It's also vital to stay hydrated from the inside out. Even though you may not feel as thirsty, drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and supports overall skin health.
