A One-Stop Shop for Healing
The Delhi government is set to launch a comprehensive digital platform called the Delhi Medical and Wellness Tourism (DMWT) portal. This initiative aims to create a single-window system for both international and domestic patients seeking treatment in the capital.
The platform will be developed and managed by a strategic partner appointed by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) for an initial ten-year period. The goal is to move away from a fragmented system where patients often rely on informal networks and instead provide a government-regulated ecosystem that is both reliable and easy to navigate.
How the Portal Will Work
The DMWT portal is designed to manage the entire patient journey from start to finish. Key features will include verified listings of accredited hospitals, AYUSH centres, and wellness facilities. Patients will be able to search for specialists, compare standardised treatment packages with transparent pricing, and book appointments directly. Beyond medical services, the platform will integrate visa assistance, travel bookings, accommodation, and even multilingual translation services. It will also feature real-time patient tracking for families, a secure payment gateway, and a formal grievance redressal mechanism to handle any issues.
Tackling an Unregulated Market
A major catalyst for this initiative is the need to regulate the largely unorganised medical tourism sector in Delhi, which attracts an estimated three million patients annually. For years, patients have been vulnerable to unauthorised intermediaries and a lack of standardised pricing, leading to inconsistent experiences and potential exploitation. Officials have noted that without a central coordination mechanism, the city couldn't reach its full potential compared to global competitors like Singapore and Thailand. Recent safety concerns, including a fire at an unregulated medical stay facility, have also highlighted the urgent need for better oversight and governance.
Boosting Trust and the Economy
By formalising the system, the Delhi government aims to position the capital as a world-leading, trustworthy medical hub. The portal will only empanel accredited providers, ensuring a benchmark for quality. The first phase aims to bring on board at least five JCI-accredited hospitals, 25 NABH-accredited hospitals, and numerous wellness centres and service providers. This move is expected to not only enhance patient safety and experience but also provide a significant boost to the city's economy. By creating a transparent and reliable ecosystem, Delhi hopes to attract more medical tourists, increase revenue, and build a global brand for excellence in healthcare.
The Road Ahead
The project is on a fast track. The DTTDC has already floated the Request for Proposal (RFP) to select an agency to build and operate the platform. According to the proposed timeline, an initial version of the DMWT portal is expected to launch within 120 days of the contract being finalised, with a full public launch within 240 days. The appointed agency will be responsible for everything from developing the web portal and mobile apps to international marketing campaigns. This ambitious project will integrate with various national systems, including immigration authorities and the National Medical Value Travel Portal, to ensure a seamless experience.
