A Major Time-Saving Upgrade
For the thousands who travel between India's financial capital and its Silicon Valley, the journey has long been a test of patience. Existing trains, like the Udyan Express, take anywhere from 22 to over 24 hours to cover the distance. The new Vande Bharat
sleeper service is expected to slash this travel time dramatically. Reports suggest the journey will be completed in approximately 16 hours, potentially saving passengers between six and eight hours. This significant reduction could be a game-changer for business travellers and families alike, turning a day-long journey into a comfortable overnight trip. The train is expected to depart from Bengaluru's Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal in the evening and arrive at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus the next morning, with a similar schedule for the return journey.
More Than Just a Faster Train
The Vande Bharat sleeper isn't just about speed; it's a complete overhaul of the overnight travel experience. The train will consist of 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, including AC First, Two-Tier, and Three-Tier classes, with a total capacity of 823 berths. Passengers can expect a host of modern amenities designed for comfort and convenience. The coaches feature cushioned berths, sensor-based lighting, and improved access to upper berths. For connectivity, each berth is equipped with individual reading lights and charging points. The train also boasts advanced bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, similar to those in aircraft, and a hot shower facility for First AC passengers. Safety is also a priority, with the train fitted with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and an emergency talk-back facility.
Connecting Key Economic Hubs
The Mumbai-Bengaluru route has been a prime candidate for a high-speed upgrade for years, with high demand from business travellers, tech professionals, and students. The lack of a premium, fast overnight train has been a long-standing issue for commuters on this corridor. The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper addresses this gap directly. The proposed route will include stops at several key towns and cities, such as Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, and Raichur, enhancing connectivity for passengers across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. This will not only benefit those travelling between the two terminal cities but also provide a faster option for people in intermediate locations.
When Can You Board?
After several delays and much anticipation, an official launch date has been announced. Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna confirmed that India's second Vande Bharat sleeper train is scheduled for its inaugural run on November 1, 2026, coinciding with Karnataka Rajyotsava. This follows the successful launch of the first sleeper service on the Howrah-Kamakhya route earlier in the year. The rakes for the new service were manufactured by BEML in Bengaluru and have undergone trial runs. While the official fare structure is yet to be announced by Indian Railways, the launch signals a new era for comfortable and efficient long-distance rail travel in the country.
