A New Era for Family Travel
For years, airports were designed with a single-minded focus on efficiency, often leaving families to fend for themselves in crowded, stressful environments. Children's amenities were typically an afterthought. However, that is changing dramatically as
airports now view families as a key demographic. This shift means that features designed to reduce stress and make the airport experience enjoyable are becoming standard. In India, this trend is taking firm root, with major hubs now competing to offer the best services for their youngest passengers, transforming the pre-flight wait from a period of stress into a comfortable and even fun experience.
Play Areas Take Flight
One of the most visible changes is the rise of dedicated children's play areas. These are no longer sad corners with a few worn-out toys but vibrant, engaging spaces. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) features a 'Jungle Safari' themed play zone in Terminal 2 for children aged 2-12. Similarly, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) has colourful play areas at multiple locations. Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) also offers dedicated kids' play zones, which contributed to it being named one of the world's most family-friendly airports in 2026. Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has also been lauded for its play areas, which helped it secure a top spot in global family-friendly rankings. These spaces allow children to burn off energy before a long flight, making the journey more pleasant for everyone.
Comfort for the Smallest Travellers
Airports are also significantly improving facilities for infants and toddlers. Clean, private, and quiet baby care rooms are becoming a standard feature. These rooms are equipped with changing tables, comfortable seating for feeding, and often hot and cold water dispensers. Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru airports all provide these well-equipped spaces. Some, like Bengaluru's Terminal 2, even include a microwave for warming milk or food and provide complimentary baby care products. This focus on providing a sanitary and peaceful environment for parents to care for their infants is a game-changer, removing a major point of anxiety for travelling families.
Services That Smooth the Journey
Beyond play areas and nursing rooms, airports are introducing a suite of services to ease the logistical challenges of family travel. Complimentary strollers are now available at major hubs like Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, allowing parents to navigate the terminal without having to bring their own. Delhi Airport's 'Family@DEL' initiative, launched in early 2026, is a comprehensive program offering dedicated entry gates, family check-in counters, and priority security lanes across all its terminals. Hyderabad Airport provides trained passenger service associates to specifically assist families. Some airports are even introducing sensory rooms for neurodivergent passengers, as seen at Bengaluru's KIA, showing a deeper commitment to inclusive design.
The Business of a Better Experience
This shift isn't just about goodwill; it's smart business. Airport operators have recognised that when families have a less stressful experience, they are more likely to spend time and money in retail and dining outlets. A relaxed family might browse shops or sit down for a full meal, whereas a stressed one will likely just head straight to the gate. International hubs like Singapore's Changi and South Korea's Incheon have long demonstrated that world-class family amenities can be a deciding factor for travellers choosing a layover airport. As Indian airports increasingly compete on a global stage, investing in the passenger experience for all age groups has become a crucial part of their strategy to attract and retain travellers.
