The Visa Requirement for Indians
First things first: yes, Indian citizens require a visa to enter Japan for tourism. Unlike some destinations that offer visa-on-arrival, Japan requires travellers to apply for their visa in advance. The good news is that the process is quite structured,
and as of April 2024, Japan has introduced an e-visa system for Indian nationals applying for a single-entry short-term tourist visa (up to 90 days), which streamlines part of the process. However, applications are still managed through VFS Global centres, not directly via a government web portal.
Your Essential Document Checklist
Preparation is everything. A disorganised application is a common reason for delays, so gathering your documents meticulously is your first and most important task. While requirements can vary slightly, a standard tourist visa application will generally require: a valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages, a completed visa application form, and a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background. You will also need to provide a detailed day-by-day itinerary of your trip, confirmed return flight tickets, and proof of hotel reservations for your entire stay.
Proving Your Financial Stability
One of the most critical parts of the application is demonstrating that you have sufficient funds to cover your trip. This typically involves submitting your latest bank statements for the last six months. It's advisable that the statements show a consistent and healthy balance. In addition to bank statements, you’ll need to provide your Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the last three years. If you are employed, you will also need to include your last three months' salary slips and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or leave sanction letter from your employer. These documents collectively assure the consulate of your financial standing and your intention to return to India.
The Application Process Step-by-Step
The process begins by downloading the latest visa application form from the VFS Global website. Fill it out carefully, ensuring all details are accurate. Once your form and all supporting documents are ready, you need to schedule an appointment at your nearest VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centre. You will submit your application in person on the appointed day. After submission, you can track your application's status online using the reference number provided. For successful e-visa applicants, you will receive a “visa issuance notice” electronically, which you must display on a mobile device at the airport; printouts or screenshots are not accepted.
Processing Time and Fees
Patience is a virtue, especially during visa processing. Typically, a Japan tourist visa takes about 5 to 10 working days to process after being submitted to the embassy or consulate. However, this is an indicative timeline and can take longer during peak travel seasons like the cherry blossom period. It is always wise to apply well in advance, at least three to four weeks before your intended travel date. The visa fee for Indian nationals is relatively modest for both single and multiple-entry visas, though you will also need to pay a service charge to VFS Global.
