This indicates a broader trend of people embracing shorter, more frequent getaways, even during the rains. The biggest surprise, however, is the region leading this charge. Instead of traditional monsoon destinations, it's the Northeast that has emerged as the season's strongest-performing region.
Why All Eyes Are on the Northeast
The Northeast's ascent is not accidental. The region, known for its breathtaking natural beauty, becomes even more magical during the monsoon. Mountains are draped in mist, valleys turn a vibrant, lush green, and waterfalls cascade with full force. According to booking data, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have seen the strongest growth, with hotel bookings climbing by more than 90% and flight bookings increasing by 62% year-on-year. This surge in interest is also visible in neighbouring states. Hotel bookings in Shillong rose by over 65%, and Guwahati saw a growth of more than 60%. This suggests travellers are looking for immersive, nature-led, and offbeat experiences, moving away from conventional itineraries.
Destinations Driving the Boom
Several key destinations are at the heart of this travel boom. Meghalaya, the 'Abode of Clouds', is a prime attraction. Places like Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Mawsynram, known for being among the wettest places on Earth, offer a surreal experience with their powerful waterfalls like Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters Falls, and unique living root bridges. In Assam, the state's only hill station, Haflong, becomes a misty paradise, while tea gardens across the state take on a fresh, verdant look. Further afield, Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh and Dzukou Valley on the Nagaland-Manipur border offer stunning landscapes of green hills and seasonal flowers, attracting trekkers and nature lovers alike.
