Know Before You Go: Dates, Timings & Booking
Amrit Udyan’s Summer Annuals edition is open to the public from August 16 to September 15, 2026. The gardens welcome visitors from 10 am to 6 pm, with the last entry permitted at 5 pm. Remember that the gardens are closed every Monday for maintenance.
Entry is free, but booking your slot online in advance is mandatory. There is no on-the-spot booking available. You can reserve your spot on the official Rashtrapati Bhavan visitor website. Bookings for a specific day close at 10 am on the previous day, so plan ahead, especially for weekends which see more visitors. A convenient shuttle bus service runs every 30 minutes from the Central Secretariat Metro Station to the entrance at Gate No. 35.
Dressing for a Damp Day
Your outfit can make or break a rainy-day visit. Opt for lightweight, quick-drying fabrics like rayon, georgette, or cotton blends. These materials won't cling uncomfortably if you get caught in a shower and will dry much faster than heavy fabrics. Avoid pure cotton, denim, and linen, as they absorb a lot of water and take a long time to dry. Choose shorter hemlines, such as ankle-length trousers or knee-length kurtis, to avoid dragging your clothes through puddles. The most important element is your footwear. Wear comfortable, non-slip sandals or waterproof flats. Avoid leather, suede, or any shoes that could be ruined by water or cause you to slip on wet pathways.
What to Carry (and What to Leave Behind)
Packing light is key, but a few essentials will make your visit much more comfortable. An umbrella is permitted and is a must-have. Consider a small waterproof bag or pouch to protect your mobile phone and wallet. While mobile phones are allowed, professional cameras and video cameras are not. You also cannot bring in food, backpacks, or cigarettes. For parents visiting with infants, small handbags with water and milk bottles are allowed. Official facilities include drinking water stalls, first-aid posts, and restrooms along the visitor route. Rain shelters are also set up to provide protection during a downpour.
Navigating the Gardens in the Rain
The monsoon brings out the best in Amrit Udyan, with summer annuals and indigenous flowers in full bloom. The garden trail for this season covers attractions like the Bonsai Garden, Central Lawn, and the newly developed Babbling Brook Garden. When it rains, stick to the main paved pathways, as grassy slopes can become slippery. Take your time and watch your step. The rain can create beautiful, reflective surfaces for photography, especially around the floral displays and water features. Don’t let a drizzle stop you; the gardens are often less crowded during a light shower, offering a more serene experience. The fresh smell of rain on the soil combined with the fragrant flowers is a unique sensory experience you won't want to miss.
Making the Most of Your Visit
A rainy day offers a unique perspective on the 15-acre estate. The colours of the flowers, such as Gul-mehndi and Aparajita, appear more saturated against the grey sky. If the rain becomes too heavy, you can take refuge in the provided rain shelters along the route. This might also be a good opportunity to visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum, which requires a separate ticket but can be a great indoor activity. You can also check out the Mitti Cafe, which is run by individuals with disabilities and offers a wonderful place to take a break. By embracing the weather instead of fighting it, your first visit to Amrit Udyan can be a memorable and magical one.
