Jute and cane bring a sense of warmth, texture, and sustainable chic to any space. From woven chairs and headboards to rustic rugs and lampshades, their versatility is unmatched. However, these materials are hygroscopic, meaning they naturally absorb
moisture from the air. In a humid climate, this quality becomes their greatest vulnerability. During the Indian monsoon, when indoor humidity can rise dramatically, these natural fibres swell as they soak up airborne moisture. This can lead to a host of problems: the weave may loosen and sag, furniture can warp, and a musty odour can develop, often as a precursor to mould and mildew. This doesn't mean you have to give up on the trend; it simply means a little proactive care and repair knowledge is essential.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Protecting your natural fibre decor starts with smart placement and environmental control. Stagnant, humid air is the primary enemy. Ensure good ventilation by opening windows on dry, sunny days. A dehumidifier is an excellent investment, especially in coastal cities, to maintain indoor humidity levels between 45% and 55%. Avoid placing jute or cane furniture flush against walls; leave a gap of a few inches for air to circulate and prevent trapped moisture. It's also wise to keep these pieces away from direct contact with damp walls or windows. For rugs, avoid placing them in naturally damp areas like basements or bathrooms. Regularly dusting with a soft, dry cloth or a vacuum's brush attachment prevents dust from trapping humidity against the fibres.
Tackling Mould and Mildew
If you spot white, green, or black patches on your decor, act quickly. For light mildew, a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water can be effective. Gently scrub the affected area with a soft brush, being careful not to saturate the fibres. For more stubborn mould on a jute rug, you might need a more potent solution. Some experts recommend a heavily diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to six parts water), but you must test it on an inconspicuous corner first to ensure it doesn't discolour the material. After cleaning any mould, thorough drying is critical. Use a fan or a hairdryer on a low setting to completely dry the area, as any residual dampness will only invite the mould back. For cane furniture, if mildew forms, clean it with a strong bleach and soapy water solution before immediately drying the piece outdoors if possible.
Repairing Frays, Snags, and Breaks
Everyday use can lead to frayed edges on a jute rug or a broken strand in a cane chair. For a frayed jute rug, start by trimming the loose fibres to create a clean edge. You can then sew on a piece of fabric binding tape using a strong upholstery thread for a neat, durable finish. For small unraveling sections in the middle of a rug, use a curved needle to stitch the braids together from the underside. Repairing pre-woven cane sheets, often found in modern furniture, is also a manageable DIY project. The process involves removing the old, damaged cane and the spline that holds it in a groove. After cleaning the groove, a new sheet of cane, soaked in warm water to make it pliable, is pressed into place. A new spline is then glued and tapped into the groove over the cane to secure it. As the cane dries, it will pull taut, restoring the furniture's original look.

While many minor repairs are straightforward, some jobs are best left to professionals. Antique furniture, which often features hand-woven caning threaded through individual holes, requires specialized skill to repair correctly. Similarly, if a piece of furniture has significant structural damage, such as a broken frame or widespread weakening of the rattan, a professional restorer will have the tools and expertise to safely rebuild it. If a jute rug has extensive water damage or persistent mould that returns after cleaning, it may be permanently damaged and pose a health risk, requiring replacement.
