The Konkan Classic: Mumbai to Goa
Often hailed as an engineering marvel, the Konkan Railway route is a visual delight during the monsoon. As the train winds its way along the Western Ghats, passengers are treated to a panorama of vibrant greenery, swollen rivers, and countless waterfalls
that spring to life, sometimes cascading right next to the tracks. The journey on trains like the Mandovi Express takes you through approximately 92 tunnels and over 2,000 bridges, offering dramatic views of the rain-soaked Sahyadri mountains. The 12-hour ride passes through popular spots like Lonavala and Ratnagiri, eventually culminating in Goa, where the monsoon offers a more tranquil and lush version of the popular beach destination.
The Himalayan Queen: Kalka to Shimla
A journey on the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is like travelling back in time. The narrow-gauge 'toy train' navigates a winding 96-kilometre path through more than 100 tunnels and across 800 bridges. During the monsoon, the pine and oak forests appear greener, and a mysterious mist often shrouds the mountains, creating a magical atmosphere. The slow pace of the train allows you to fully immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Shivalik hills, with panoramic views of misty valleys and quaint colonial-era stations along the way. However, travellers should be mindful that heavy rains can sometimes lead to service disruptions on this fragile, historic line.
The Southern Gem: Mettupalayam to Ooty
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, another UNESCO World Heritage line, offers a charming journey up to the 'Queen of the Nilgiris'. This is the only rack-and-pinion railway in India, allowing the vintage steam locomotive to climb the steep, misty hills of the Western Ghats. The monsoon transforms the route into a verdant wonderland, with lush tea plantations, dense eucalyptus forests, and waterfalls coming alive. The train chugs through picturesque towns like Coonoor and Wellington, offering magnificent views of the rain-washed Nilgiri mountains before arriving in Ooty, where the cool, misty weather provides a perfect romantic escape.
The Darjeeling Delight: New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the 'Toy Train', was the first mountain railway in India to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey from the plains of New Jalpaiguri ascends into the Eastern Himalayas, offering spectacular views of sprawling tea gardens that look especially fresh and vibrant in the rain. The train passes through Ghum, India's highest railway station, and negotiates sharp curves and steep gradients. While the monsoon creates a mystical atmosphere with low-hanging clouds, it's also a period when the service is prone to suspensions due to landslides, so checking the train's operational status is essential.
The Valley Voyage: Visakhapatnam to Araku
For a journey through the heart of the Eastern Ghats, the train from Visakhapatnam to the Araku Valley is an excellent choice. This route cuts through stunning landscapes, passing through 84 bridges and 58 tunnels. During the monsoon, the valleys come alive with lush greenery and the mountains are often cloaked in mist. Highlights of the four-hour journey include views of the million-year-old Borra Caves and the impressive Ananthagiri Waterfalls, which are particularly spectacular during the rainy season. This ride offers a unique glimpse into a less-explored but incredibly scenic part of India.
