Kolkata: The Grand Epicentre
Nowhere is Durga Puja celebrated with the grandeur and scale seen in Kolkata. The entire city transforms into a living art gallery, with thousands of elaborate pandals (temporary structures) competing in artistry and theme. These range from replicas of historic
temples to avant-garde installations conveying social messages. The celebration is rooted in tradition, with some community pujas dating back centuries, like the one started by the Savarna Roychowdhury family in 1610. Pandal hopping is the primary activity, as millions of people, dressed in new attire, explore the creative displays day and night. The air is thick with the rhythmic beats of the dhak (a traditional drum), the scent of incense, and the aroma of street food, creating an unforgettable sensory overload. The festival culminates with the emotional immersion of the idols in the river, symbolising the Goddess's return to her celestial home.
Delhi: A Slice of Bengal in the Capital
In Delhi, the hub of Durga Puja celebrations is Chittaranjan Park, fondly known as 'Mini Kolkata'. This neighbourhood comes alive with a spirit that rivals its namesake, featuring magnificent pandals, dazzling idols, and streets lined with stalls selling authentic Bengali cuisine, from fish cutlets to puchkas. The celebrations here, which began in 1977, have grown to become some of the most spectacular in the city, complete with traditional dhak drummers and cultural programmes featuring renowned artists. Beyond C.R. Park, prominent pandals can be found at Kashmere Gate, Safdarjung Enclave, and Minto Road, each offering a unique artistic and cultural experience. The festival serves as a cultural bridge, allowing both the Bengali diaspora and other communities to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of the festival.
Mumbai: Where Tradition Meets Glamour
Mumbai's Durga Puja is a fascinating blend of devotion, cultural richness, and a touch of Bollywood glamour. The North Bombay Sarbojanin Durgotsav in Juhu is famous for being a star-studded affair, with celebrities often seen participating in the rituals. For a more traditional and serene experience, many head to the Ramakrishna Mission in Khar, which hosts one of the city's oldest pujas. Other prominent celebrations are held by the Bengal Club at Shivaji Park, known for its sophisticated themes, and in areas like Lokhandwala and Powai, where modern artistry blends with traditional elements. Unlike the Navratri pandals focused on Garba and Dandiya, Mumbai's Durga Puja pandals are distinctly Bengali, focusing on rituals like Pushpanjali, bhog distribution, and Sindur Khela.
Bengaluru: A Tech Hub's Creative Heart
In Bengaluru, Durga Puja has evolved into a major cultural event that showcases the city's multicultural fabric. Pandal themes here are often innovative and artistic, with organisers bringing in artisans from Kolkata to craft the idols. Celebrations are spread across the city in areas like Koramangala, Indiranagar, and Electronic City, allowing residents to celebrate close to home. What makes Bengaluru's pujas special is the creative fusion of cultures. You might find pandals designed with a Lord Jagannath theme by the Odia community or celebrations by the Bihari diaspora highlighting Mithila's art forms. This blend of traditional Bengali rituals with local and diverse cultural influences makes the city's Durga Puja a unique and inclusive experience.
Guwahati: A Northeastern Spectacle
After Kolkata, many believe Guwahati hosts some of the country's best Durga Puja celebrations. The festival is a major event in Assam, with hundreds of pandals across the city in areas like Paltan Bazar, Uzan Bazar, and Maligaon. The city is expected to have between 550 and 600 pujas, showcasing a blend of Assamese and Bengali traditions. The idols often reflect regional artistic styles, giving the celebrations a distinct character. Guwahati's pandals are known for their creative themes, drawing huge crowds for pandal hopping. From unique water-based pandal themes to an emphasis on spiritual worship at historic venues, the city offers a rich and varied festive experience.
