What is Cropland Degradation?
At its heart, cropland degradation is the decline in the health and productivity of the land we use to grow food. Think of soil as a living ecosystem. Healthy soil is rich in nutrients and organic matter, holds water effectively, and supports a variety
of microscopic life that helps plants thrive. Degradation happens when this delicate balance is broken. It can take many forms: soil erosion from wind and water, the depletion of essential nutrients from over-farming, increased salinity from poor irrigation, and contamination from the excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. According to the United Nations, a significant portion of the world's soil is already degraded, with some projections suggesting that over 90% could be degraded by 2050 if current trends continue. In India, it's estimated that around a third of the country's land is affected, a serious concern for an agricultural economy.
The Traditional Farm-Level Risk
Traditionally, the risk associated with a patch of poor soil belonged almost entirely to the farmer who worked it. If a farmer's land became less productive, their personal yield would fall, and their income would suffer. While devastating for the individual, this was seen as an idiosyncratic risk—a localised problem that didn't affect the broader market. A single farm's bad harvest, or even a few hundred, is a drop in the ocean of a national food supply chain. The market could easily absorb these small, isolated losses. The risk was contained, staying within the farm's boundary.
When Local Problems Go Systemic
The central issue today is that cropland degradation is no longer an isolated problem. When thousands of farms across a vast region experience declining soil health simultaneously, the risk profile changes dramatically. Factors like uniform unsustainable farming practices, coupled with the accelerating impacts of climate change like erratic monsoons and prolonged droughts, synchronise these individual farm failures. What were once thousands of small, independent risks now merge into one large, correlated, systemic risk. Instead of a few farms failing, entire agricultural belts begin to underperform together. A recent study highlighted that a 10% increase in land degradation can lead to a 2% increase in the gap between potential and actual crop yields. When this happens at scale, it creates a significant supply shock that individual farmers cannot hedge against and the market cannot ignore.
The Indian Context
India faces a particularly acute version of this problem. Decades of policies that encouraged intensive agriculture, such as subsidies for chemical fertilisers and electricity for water pumps, helped achieve food self-sufficiency but also took a toll on soil health. A study of millions of Indian soil samples found the vast majority were deficient in key nutrients and organic carbon. In states like Punjab and Haryana, the heartland of the Green Revolution, overuse of water has led to falling water tables, while other regions face desertification. This widespread degradation means that a poor monsoon or a heatwave no longer affects just a few districts; it can threaten the output of entire states, which collectively supply the nation's food basket. This turns a production problem into a national food security and economic stability issue.
The Price on Your Plate
This is where the risk lands squarely in the food market. A large-scale, synchronized drop in production leads to scarcity. Basic economics dictates that when supply falls short of demand, prices rise. This isn't just about a single farmer getting a lower price; it's about traders expecting lower overall supply, which fuels speculation and price volatility in the wholesale mandis. These costs are inevitably passed down the chain, from the wholesaler to the retailer, and finally, to the consumer. The rising price of onions or dal isn't just about this season's weather; it's increasingly about the long-term, systemic decline of our agricultural land's productive capacity. The risk has officially shifted from the farm field to your kitchen table.
