Budget Travel Basics from Bhubaneswar
Before you set off, a little planning goes a long way in keeping your trip affordable. For transport, prioritise trains and government or private buses over booking a private cab for the entire journey, which can be expensive. Trains are often the cheapest
and most efficient way to get between major hubs like Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Balasore. For local sightseeing, auto-rickshaws (especially shared ones) are your best friend. Always agree on the fare before starting your ride. When it comes to accommodation, look for guesthouses (Panthanivas), homestays, and budget hotels, which offer clean and simple lodging. Eating at local dhabas and small restaurants is not only easy on the wallet but also offers an authentic taste of Odia cuisine. A typical meal can cost well under ₹200.
Coastal Circuit 1: The Golden Triangle
The classic Puri-Konark-Chilika circuit is a must-do and can be surprisingly budget-friendly. Start by taking a train from Bhubaneswar to Puri (approx. 1.5-2 hours). In Puri, hotels and guesthouses are plentiful, with many budget options near the beach and temple. From Puri, you can take a local bus or a shared auto to the Konark Sun Temple, about 35 km away. A round trip won't set you back much. Don't miss the serene Chandrabhaga Beach nearby. For Chilika Lake, head to Satapada (about 50 km from Puri). Regular buses ply this route. Once there, you can join a group boat tour to spot dolphins and visit the sea mouth, which is much cheaper than hiring a private boat. Plan to stay in Puri and make day trips to Konark and Chilika to save on accommodation costs.
Coastal Circuit 2: The Disappearing Sea at Chandipur
For a different kind of coastal experience, head north to Chandipur Beach in the Balasore district. What makes this beach unique is that the sea recedes up to 5 kilometres during low tide, allowing you to walk on the seabed. The most economical way to get there is by train from Bhubaneswar to Balasore (BLS), a journey of about 3-4 hours. From Balasore station, Chandipur is just 16 km away. You can take a shared auto for as little as ₹30-₹50 or a private one for around ₹250-₹300. Accommodation options include the government-run Panthanivas and other budget hotels. A two-day trip here can be done on a tight budget, with fresh seafood from beachside stalls being a highlight. You can also take a day trip to the Panchalingeswar Temple in the nearby Nilgiri Hills.
Forest Circuit: Daringbadi, the Kashmir of Odisha
If you're craving cool climes and green hills, Daringbadi is your answer. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 feet, this hill station is known for its pine forests and coffee plantations. Reaching Daringbadi on a budget requires using public transport. Several overnight buses run from Bhubaneswar's Baramunda Bus Stand to Daringbadi, with fares starting around ₹650. The journey takes about 7-8 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train to Berhampur and then a bus or shared taxi from there. While a private cab from Bhubaneswar is an option, it is significantly more expensive. In Daringbadi, homestays and budget hotels offer affordable lodging. Local sightseeing of spots like the pine forest, coffee gardens, and various viewpoints can be done by hiring a local auto-rickshaw for the day.
Forest & Wildlife: The Simlipal National Park Fringe
While a full-fledged safari inside Simlipal National Park can be pricey, exploring its periphery is a great budget alternative for nature lovers. The cheapest way to approach the area is by taking a train from Bhubaneswar to Baripada or Balasore, and then using local buses to get closer to the entry points like Jashipur. Travel to the park from Bhubaneswar involves a combination of a train and then a taxi, which is more economical than a direct cab. There are basic guesthouses and lodges in towns near the park. A visit here is less about organised safaris and more about experiencing the dense Sal forests, serene tribal villages, and the natural beauty of the region. Always check for necessary permits and entry requirements beforehand, as they can change.
