The Strongest Hiring Outlook Globally
As the festive season approaches, Indian companies are signalling their strongest hiring intentions in recent memory. According to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey for the fourth quarter (October-December) of 2026, India leads 42 countries
in hiring confidence. The survey, which polled over 3,000 employers, reveals a Net Employment Outlook (NEO) of +54%. This figure is derived by subtracting the percentage of employers planning to reduce staff from those planning to hire. A remarkable 65% of employers plan to increase their headcount, while only 11% foresee reductions. This marks a notable six-point increase from the previous quarter and an eleven-point jump from the same time last year, positioning India's outlook 25 points above the global average. This surge reflects a resilient domestic economy and growing business confidence.
Which Sectors Are Leading the Charge?
The positive sentiment isn't uniform, with several key sectors driving the momentum. The Finance & Insurance sector shows one of the strongest outlooks at 60%, bolstered by strong credit demand and the expansion of digital finance. Close behind is the Travel & Hospitality industry, which has seen a dramatic 21-point quarterly surge in hiring sentiment, posting an outlook of 58%. Other reports confirm this trend, with e-commerce, tech startups, and retail also showing powerful hiring intent. One report projects a 12.6% net employment change for e-commerce and tech startups, and 12.3% for travel and hospitality for the second half of the fiscal year. Core sectors like Automotive, EV infrastructure, and Banking also continue to show strong demand.
It’s a Hunt for New Capabilities
The headline isn't just about more jobs; it’s about different jobs. Employers are strategically reshaping their workforces to meet evolving demands. Nearly 70% of companies planning to hire cite changing roles and the need for new skills as a primary driver. This is a clear shift from broad-based expansion to targeted talent acquisition. The most sought-after capabilities are a blend of technical and soft skills. Expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data analytics is paramount. At the same time, companies are also prioritising soft skills like communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability, which are seen as crucial for navigating a changing business landscape.
The Rise of AI and Skills-Based Hiring
The integration of Artificial Intelligence is not just a skill in demand; it's also changing how companies hire. Many organisations are now using AI in their recruitment processes, though its impact on speeding up hiring times is still varied. This technological shift reinforces a broader move towards skills-based hiring. Companies are increasingly looking past traditional qualifications to focus on verifiable, practical skills. This trend is a double-edged sword for job seekers. While it creates opportunities for those with in-demand expertise, it also intensifies the competition. Reports indicate that over 70% of employers expect moderate to significant difficulty in finding the right talent, particularly for roles in IT, sales, and engineering, highlighting a persistent gap between available skills and industry needs.
What This Means for Job Seekers
For those in the job market, the message is clear: the opportunities are abundant, but they favour the prepared. The strong hiring outlook, particularly for freshers, is encouraging, with 73% of employers intending to hire new graduates. However, a generic degree is no longer a guaranteed ticket. Job seekers should focus on acquiring and demonstrating the specific capabilities that companies are searching for. This means building project portfolios, earning certifications in high-demand areas like cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), data tools (Power BI, Tableau), and cybersecurity, and honing communication skills. The market is a candidate's market, but only for those who can prove they have the future-ready skills that align with the strategic needs of modern businesses.
