At the heart of our sleep patterns is the circadian rhythm, a 24-hour internal clock that tells our body when to feel awake and when to feel sleepy. This rhythm is powerfully influenced by one main factor: light. When sunlight enters our eyes in the morning,
it signals our brain to be alert and suppress melatonin, the hormone that makes us drowsy. As darkness falls in the evening, melatonin production ramps up, preparing us for sleep. For centuries, this natural cycle of light and dark governed human sleep. However, modern life—with its indoor lighting, screens, and temperature-controlled environments—has created a buffer that can disconnect us from these natural cues. Despite this, research shows our bodies still respond to seasonal shifts in daylight, which can throw our sleep out of sync.
Summer: Longer Days, Later Nights
During the long, bright days of summer, your body receives light signals for a longer period. This can delay the evening release of melatonin, making it harder to feel tired at your usual bedtime. The result is often a tendency to stay up later and, for some, difficulty falling asleep. Compounded by higher temperatures that can interfere with the body's natural cooling process needed for sleep, summer can present unique challenges. To adapt, focus on consistency. Try to wake up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends. Get bright sunlight exposure early in the morning to anchor your circadian rhythm. In the evening, help your body wind down by dimming indoor lights and avoiding blue-light emitting screens an hour or two before bed. Keeping your bedroom cool and dark is also essential.
Winter: Shorter Days, More Fatigue
Winter brings the opposite challenge. Shorter days and reduced exposure to natural light can confuse our internal clocks. Without a strong morning light signal, your body may not fully suppress melatonin, leading to that groggy, tired feeling that can last all day. The long, dark evenings can also trick your body into feeling sleepy far too early, which might lead to fragmented sleep later in the night. This pattern is a key factor in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to the change in seasons. To combat the winter slump, prioritise getting outside for some natural light as early in the day as possible, even if it's overcast. Maintaining a regular exercise schedule can also boost energy levels and improve sleep quality. Resist the temptation to take long afternoon naps, which can disrupt your nighttime rest.
Adapting to India's Unique Seasons
While much sleep advice focuses on a simple summer/winter binary, the principles apply just as well to India’s diverse climate, including the monsoon. During the monsoon season, heavy cloud cover significantly reduces natural light exposure, similar to a northern winter. This can lead to increased daytime lethargy and disrupted sleep patterns. On these darker days, it becomes even more important to actively seek light. Sit near a window during the day, use bright indoor lighting, and take advantage of any breaks in the rain to get outside. Likewise, the intense heat and humidity before the monsoon can make sleep difficult. Focus on keeping your sleep environment cool and well-ventilated to counteract the effects of the weather. The core principle remains the same: manage your light exposure and environment to support your body’s natural rhythm, no matter the specific season.
Simple Routines for Any Season
Regardless of the time of year, a consistent routine is your best ally for better sleep. Sticking to a regular sleep-wake schedule, even on holidays and weekends, helps stabilize your circadian rhythm. Creating a relaxing wind-down ritual before bed—such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing gentle stretches—signals to your body that it's time to prepare for rest. Pay attention to your diet as well; heavy meals or excessive caffeine late in the day can interfere with sleep. By making small, mindful adjustments to your daily habits, you can work with your body's natural inclinations rather than against them, helping you achieve more restorative sleep all year round.
