Why Your Winter Trip Will Cost More
A perfect storm of factors is brewing, set to drive hotel prices skyward in the coming weeks. The period immediately following Diwali traditionally kicks off the peak season for leisure travel in India. This year, the demand is particularly robust, with
travel companies reporting a significant upswing in bookings for the October to December period. According to an analysis by AI-powered pricing firm Sciative Solutions, this surge is expected to cause a sharp increase in hotel rates. The data, which reviewed over 3,000 properties, indicates that mid-scale hotel rates are projected to jump by nearly 27% in the days following the festival, with premium properties following a similar upward trend. This price pressure isn't just a brief spike; rates are expected to remain elevated throughout November and into the popular Christmas and New Year travel window.
The Destinations in Highest Demand
Predictably, India's most beloved holiday spots are at the centre of this demand surge. Goa is leading the charge, with projections showing premium hotel rates in the state could climb by nearly 42% in the latter half of November compared to the pre-Diwali period. Other popular destinations are not far behind. Hill stations like Ooty, Mussoorie, and Mahabaleshwar are also bracing for a massive influx of tourists, with average rates climbing significantly. The trend also includes destinations known for heritage and culture. Cities in Rajasthan, such as Udaipur, continue to be firm favourites for those seeking leisure and history. The improved highway connectivity across the country has also made drive-to holidays more popular, boosting demand in regional circuits like Ooty-Wayanad and Kasauli-Chail-Kufri. Even spiritual destinations like Rishikesh and Varanasi are seeing strong interest.
Understanding the Price Hikes
The numbers paint a clear picture of the expected tariff increases. Before Diwali, the average rate for a premium hotel room was around ₹25,917. This is projected to rise to ₹31,163 during the post-Diwali weekend and stay near ₹32,126 for the rest of November. Mid-scale accommodations are expected to see prices climb from an average of ₹9,221 to over ₹11,700 in the same period. In high-demand locations, the figures are even more pronounced. Lonavala shows one of the highest average displayed rates at ₹29,655, while five-star properties in Goa are averaging around ₹29,891. The trend is consistent across the board, with travel fintech platform Scapia reporting that average nightly room rates have already climbed 17% year-on-year, with Christmas and New Year rates running nearly 40% above regular dates.
Smart Strategies for the Savvy Traveller
While the prospect of high prices can be daunting, it doesn't mean you have to cancel your winter vacation. With some strategic planning, you can still find ways to manage your budget. One of the best approaches is to explore offbeat destinations. Instead of the most popular hotspots, consider smaller beach towns or less-crowded wildlife destinations, which are seeing growing interest but may still offer more competitive pricing. Flexibility with your travel dates can also lead to significant savings. Travelling on weekdays instead of weekends can often yield lower prices for both accommodation and flights. It is also wise to book well in advance, as a growing number of travellers are planning their festive holidays earlier. Some reports indicate that nearly 16% of festive bookings are now being made at least two months ahead of time. Finally, don't underestimate the value of package deals and booking directly with hotels, which sometimes offer special rates or inclusions not available elsewhere.
