Why More Trains Are Running in July
July is a peak travel month in India, driven by the tail end of summer holidays, monsoon-period travel, and various festivals. This surge in demand often leads to long waiting lists for regular trains and expensive last-minute options. To manage this
rush, Indian Railways has extended a significant number of special train services that were initially introduced for the summer season. These services, which run in addition to regular schedules, aim to increase berth availability and provide relief to passengers struggling to find confirmed tickets. Several railway zones, including Western, Central, and Southern Railways, have issued notifications confirming the continued operation of these trains through the end of July and even into August on some routes.
Key Extended Routes by Railway Zone
Different zones have extended services on high-demand routes. Southern Railway has extended several services within Tamil Nadu and to neighbouring states. For instance, weekly specials between Tirunelveli and Mettupalayam (06030/06029) and Tirunelveli and Tambaram (06166/06165) will continue to run until the end of July. Similarly, services connecting Chennai Egmore with Kanyakumari (06045/06046) and Tuticorin with Tambaram have also been extended. Western Railway is continuing its special services connecting Mumbai and other parts of Gujarat with cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, such as the Mumbai Central-Banaras Special (09183/09184) and Ahmedabad-Darbhanga Special (09465/09466), which will run through July. Central Railway has also extended 216 daily and weekly special train services, including the popular Pune-Danapur daily special (01449/01450), which will now run until late September. Many of these services connect major hubs like Mumbai and Pune with destinations in northern India.
Are These 'Special' Trains Really Cheaper?
The term "less expensive" requires some context. Special trains run on a 'special fare' basis, which is typically higher than the base fare of a regular Mail or Express train. The fare structure is often comparable to the Tatkal quota charges on a regular train. However, where they offer significant savings is in comparison to 'Premium Tatkal' tickets, where prices are dynamic and can increase dramatically based on demand, sometimes exceeding airfare. For a traveller making a last-minute plan, securing a seat on a special train at a fixed 'special fare' is almost always cheaper than buying a Premium Tatkal ticket or facing exorbitant dynamic pricing on popular routes. So, while not as cheap as a regular ticket booked months in advance, they provide a more predictable and affordable option for immediate travel needs.
How to Find and Book These Services
Booking these special trains is straightforward and can be done through the same channels as regular trains. The easiest method is via the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. When searching for trains, enter your source and destination stations and your date of travel. The search results will display all available trains, including these special services, which are usually denoted by a train number starting with '0'. You can simply select the train and proceed with the booking as you normally would. Bookings can also be made at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations. Since these trains are announced to clear extra rush, it is advisable to check the IRCTC portal regularly for the latest announcements, as new services can be added at short notice.
A Word on Monsoon Schedules
Travellers planning journeys along the Konkan coast—connecting Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka—should be aware of the monsoon timetable, which is in effect until October. To ensure safety on tracks prone to landslides and heavy rain, train speeds are reduced. This leads to revised schedules for dozens of trains, including popular services like the Vande Bharat and Tejas Express, which may also see a reduction in their frequency of operation. If your travel involves this route, it's crucial to re-verify the train timings through the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) or the IRCTC website before your journey, as departures and arrivals may be different from the standard schedule.
